NDP MP Angus calls for investigation into Elon Musk over potential election interference
MP says Musk has the power to 'easily impact our electoral integrity'
@CdnCurmudgeon it's not just Musk or other current large tech companies... the rest of the media is also used to promote conservatism. CTV, Global, NP, TorStar, Fox...you name it, it's interfering in Canadian election results. Endorsements, editorials, the finance & business sections... these all promote the main conservative myths, that fiscal austerity is economically optimal, and that redistributive taxes are harmful.
@johnefrancis Agreed. But the legacy media amplifies Musk's interference by giving him a platform he didn't have in Xitter.
@CdnCurmudgeon All of Canada's mainstream media, sans the CBC, is owned by conservative US news corporations. This is why we need to regain control of our own news sources, and protect the CBC in the meantime. And yes, Elon is still a huge threat to Canada's democracy.
@Chl0333Z @CdnCurmudgeon
and CBC needs to do a whole lot better, too.
@Rural_Canadian @Chl0333Z This is the type of pathetic headline @cbcnews offers its readers. A headline that advocated for Canadians and positioned issues accurately would have read:” Amazon closes warehouse in Québec rather than allow workers to unionize.” #boycottAmazon @CdnCurmudgeon
Agreed.
Provided that the "we" who control them are the public and not billionaires who happen to have Canadian citizenship.
@Chl0333Z @CdnCurmudgeon Toronto Star owner is Canadian, based in Toronto. La Presse is a non-profit. TVA and the Le Journal chain owned by Québecor. So not "all". Québec gets some different viewpoints
@chrisbegley @Chl0333Z @CdnCurmudgeon Toronto Star ownership has recently changed, and it's beginning to show, editorially.
@zenheathen @chrisbegley @Chl0333Z
Changed how? Unless I missed the news, Bitove is still the owner, has been since mid-2022. He's still a conservative, maybe slightly less so than his former partner.
@CdnCurmudgeon Big donations to Doug Ford and Maxime Bernier, of all people, don't sit well with me.
@Chl0333Z @CdnCurmudgeon
I agree with your conclusion, but I’d say most of our traditional news media is still Canadian owned: the CBC (as you said), CTV, Global, the TorStar papers, and The Globe and Mail are all Canadian owned.
The PostMedia papers are majority foreign owned. I agree that that’s important and worrying.
@json @Chl0333Z
Maybe Canadian owned, but aside from the CBC, owned or controlled by CONservative interests, and editorially shill for the party. Winnipeg Free Press is the only daily newspaper I know is not under conservative ownership or management.
PostMedia is owned 60% (more now?) by a conservative US hedge fund. Despiste conspiracie rumours, NatPost is not secretly owned by Vladimir Putin... it just acts like it.
@CdnCurmudgeon #AdolfMusk should be banned from Canada. He is a white supremicist and a fascist.
