Here's what happens when you fail to Zak McKracken's copy protection
It's funny

The music is a variation on the intro!

A year ago, I also made a video of the Maniac Mansion copy protection. The consequences are more serious than in Zak McKracken when you fail

I played this once (or several times, since I remember you can die or fail in the game?), but that's a looong time ago. An excellent p-a-c adventure, a classic.
I played the #C64 version.
@Gamrok @DavidBFox @grumpygamer I still keep a scan of the visa codes around for good measure
@Gamrok @DavidBFox @grumpygamer I totally never ever have seen this before. I swear.
@TCD @Gamrok @grumpygamer And if you did, you did rush out and bought the game, right???
@DavidBFox @Gamrok @grumpygamer *If* I would have seen that message of course I would have! On an unrelated note: I own the game on Steam and GOG now.
@DavidBFox @TCD @Gamrok @grumpygamer Irony is, considering the used prices today, it would be been a great investment.
@breadbin @TCD @Gamrok @grumpygamer True! Especially if the box had never been opened.
@DavidBFox @breadbin @TCD @Gamrok I have an unopened LOOM. I don't have a Zak opened or unopened.
@grumpygamer @DavidBFox @breadbin @TCD @Gamrok ooh is it the CD version?
@Gamrok @DavidBFox @grumpygamer
I remember software stores!
@Gamrok going by the tendency that they put small posters of their other games into the screens (Rescue on Fractalus, Ball Blazer, Maniac Mansion) — which game is that Bikini Lady from…?

The one in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade seems mild by comparison.
For those who haven't played it, the joke here is that at the beginning of the game Marcus asks you to translate something (looking up some symbols included with the game). If you fail, Indy will later mistranslate "Grail" as "Grain", making it impossible to proceed with the game.
One of my favorite jokes in the game, and it's not in the VGA version...
(Screenshots from the Mac version.)

I've just tested the Atari ST version and it's the same
And the game switches to demo mode (and it's not possible to load/save).
@Gamrok @et_andersson @DavidBFox @grumpygamer on my Dos version it was impossible to read the grail diary

Thought so. I only mentioned mine was the Mac version to explain those crazy text boxes. The Mac version has a quite different-looking GUI compared to the other versions. (One that ScummVM doesn't yet support, though I'm working on improving that.)
@et_andersson @DavidBFox @grumpygamer You mentioned it in brackets. I suspected it was specific to this version
@et_andersson @Gamrok @DavidBFox @grumpygamer I think Earthbound on SNES had the most violent protection. If you were playing a pirated version, it made the game harder but let you go til the very last boss. Then the game froze, reboots… And ALL YOUR BACKUPS ARE GONE. https://youtu.be/BmyoV1bkXNI?si=UjSv4_CLOosaIvQ-
@ggete @et_andersson @Gamrok @grumpygamer Ouch! How would the player not know this wasn't a terrible bug in the game instead of piracy payabck?
@DavidBFox @et_andersson @Gamrok @grumpygamer the game displayed an alert when starting the game that it was a pirated version ;-)
