Hey artists/devs/authors/other creatives! Self promote all you want (so long as your instance allows it I guess) and if anyone comes into your mentions talking about how "oh we don't do that here, we value *dialogue* over *advertising*" just ignore em! Most of us want to see the cool stuff you made because making stuff and sharing it is a valuable part of community building too
Sorry for posting about this a lot but this is a hill I am absolutely willing to die on. Nobody should be forced to choose between staying on a site full of nazis and being shamed for sharing the cool shit they made, even if the sharing is intended to make money. Everyone deserves to eat
And if you only wanna have stimulating discussions and not be marketed towards then I invite you to use one of the many tools such as disabling boosts, unfollowing, muting, or blocking which are at your disposal in order to craft the experience you want on the fediverse. Just not pressuring other people into doing things your way
@eniko I wish people could separate the valid to hate corporate advertising and personal self-promo, especially for small artists/etc.
Reddit is very weird about this. Self promo is strongly discouraged. OC is (usually) encouraged. OC is inherently Self Promo.
@SirTapTap @eniko When I first heard of people criticizing promotional content here I was instantly reminded of Reddit.
@sbseltzer @SirTapTap @eniko in the meanwhile the Reddit platform itself tracks everyone and happily joins the adtech bandwagon selling data to "trusted partners".
@sbseltzer @SirTapTap @eniko Send that back to Reddit.
@SirTapTap reddit's rules on banning self promo site wide basically mean that reddit encourages posters to take credit for other people's work. Always really disliked that and it's the main reason I've never used it
@eniko it's not exactly banned, there's a largely unenforced vague thing about "more than % prevent of your posts shouldn't be about your content" or something.
It's very shitty and should be removed but admins basically don't enforce any rules except "don't get us on the news" and mods pretty much do whatever.
I think it was created in an older era of the Internet where it was basically assumed no one made anything here, we just talk about "real" things like TV shows
