Actually I'm 100% sure it's XP judging by how the fonts are rendered here

@UkeBLCatboy@mastodon.social
I mean you can change icons but replicating the way win xp/2003 renders certain fonts would be pretty hard

@dushman nice save then xD XP was peak

Or maybe 7 actually, the search feature within the start menu so you didn't have to remember which folder every program or game was in was a godsend xD

@UkeBLCatboy@mastodon.social
Windows went to shit so I've been rocking only Linux and BSD for a while

@dushman well I still like windows 11, but it's less peak xD

Of course it's only win 11 on my ally, and my gaming desktop runs both 11 and mint mate. As long as not every game runs on Linux without any bs, I'll dual boot XD

Oh and an old hp probook 3rth gen i5 laptop with 8 gb of ram and a 120 gb SSD that runs windows XP. Every few months I break it out and play an old game on it. Obviously it makes quick work of Windows XP era games as it's 7 era xD

Hell with mint it's perfect still

@dushman for all daily use... youtube anime browsing open office etc all of it.

But since I have desktop, I put XP on it for my few hundred old CD-ROM/dvd games 😂

@UkeBLCatboy@mastodon.social
Windows 11 is a straight downgrade to 10, especially the UI imo.

@dushman Agreed, but after 8, it feels great xD

@dushman I had so many problems with 11 (and this was very recent) that I just went ahead and went back to 10. No more problems. I'm dual booting it alongside Debian which is my daily driver. Use Windows for very specific software. @UkeBLCatboy

@adiz @dushman understandable, just a shame that windows 10 won't be getting updates anymore after mid next year. Then again, 10 years is a very decent timeframe for updates. Someone should really tell that to most linux distros, like wth does kubuntu get only 9 months or like 5 years on LTS - I get that you can upgrade it for free, but it very very often breaks things, you need to backup first etc, its a hassle. 9 months is insane XD

@adiz @dushman But yeah I have discord, telegram, zoom, spotify etc on my mint too. And of course instagram and youtube and mastodon etc can just be used online. Qbittorrent has linux version too and I use libreoffice anyway. It's a great daily driver, I just miss my pretty fancy opera GX :( but apart from that it has everything.

So I mostly use windows for very specific software too: games. It's just that specific niche is most of my computing time LOL

@adiz @dushman Genshin is on my ally, so it doesnt really count for this, but there is so many games that should work on linux that just don't for me on my desktop too. And its quite new, updated drivers, updated mint, heroic game launcher with proton etc. Its a total crapshoot and the proton launcher means nothing. Like, eg plague innocence worked perfectly right away, but other games with gold proton ratings just wont start/crash.

Windows easier. :D

Linux when I know not going to game xD

@UkeBLCatboy I recently installed Steam onto my Debian machine and checked things out. Was very surprised at how many games "just work" out of the box. No doubt due to compatibility with SteamOS/Steam Deck...which is just Arch Linux. I think we're going to see a lot more games on Linux in the future as developers work to make things compatible with Steam's hardware. @dushman

@adiz @dushman I was thinking so too, but it seems a lot of the games with perfect steam deck ratings still don't seem to want to work in my pc... and I don't have any weird distro or drivers or hardware installed :(

Heck, I tried kubuntu, deepin, and mint, and it was the same in all three :/

Hopefully it gets better. Untill then, modern games on windows, old games/emulators on linux. :D (Either pc or, mostly, ally or r36s handheld xD)

@adiz @dushman Bc there is this weird thing where emulators in windows only see one of my controllers, the pXn one works, but for some unknown reason, the 8bitdo, despite working perfectly, isn't picked up by winblows, whereas on linux they both just work XD

Between older windows xp laptop, ally, gaming desktop, and r36s I have something for everything so I am set. XD

But since I mostly do emulation on ally (heavy like ps2) or r36s (ps1 and below), not much linux gaming on that desktop xD

@UkeBLCatboy I run PCXS2 (PS2 emulation) on Linux and it works flawlessly. Game all the time with emulation on my Debian laptop! @dushman

@adiz @dushman yes, pcsx2 works perfectly on both! :D But since I mostly do that on my ally as great controls and great looks on the 7 inch screen, its mostly irrelevant XD of course I have it installed on my pc, but dont really need.

Even xbox 360 (red dead redemption), and ps3 (project diva, asura's wrath, lollipop chainsaw all finished so far) games run 100% full speed on the ally despite being a handheld, with ease, so there is no reason to really use my pc there XD

@UkeBLCatboy Unfortunate! The games I played ran better on Linux than they did on my Windows partition. But, my Windows partition just runs hot all the time anyway. For the longest time I thought it was some firmware or driver issue but after an exhaustive effort to try sourcing any/all bits of missing firmware for my machine I have just decided that Windows be bloatey and resource-heavy as hell. I only use Windows mostly for running RekordBox. There's a brilliant Linux app called Mixxx which I use when I'm at home with my other controller (works better than RekordBox!) but with the controller I use on the road it's not yet mapped or supported. @dushman

@adiz @dushman And yes, WHEN they run they indeed sometimes run faster xD its just that with a 60 hz 1080p tv as monitor, and a 3060ti, ryzen 7, and 32 gb of ram, I dont need 10% more performance to make my games playable (meaning: everything set to ultra at 1080p and getting 30 or 60 fps. ) Doesn't matter if like sand land could get 90 instead of 80 you know XD

That's for the MOST intense AAA games. They run fine on ally but not at ultra.

Older ones? Ally. Ps2 emulation? Ally.

@adiz @dushman more retro then that? r36s will play like everything from like 30 systems and came with 15000 roms + somehow I still need to download obscure shit I wanna play (like the new english translation of the famous pc-fx anime title Team Innocent. Yeah, that's t0o obscure IG XD). Just add roms and it'll play... anything, really. XD Of course those things run on linux too =)

oh and for old WINDOWS games? That laptop.

Like I said, I won't change perfection. D:

@UkeBLCatboy@mastodon.social
Gaming on Linux has gotten so good I'm not missing out on anything by not using Windows. I use Arch, Alpine and OpenBSD.

@dushman it has gotten better, but I seem to have bad luck, in that some games that have good ratings on protonDB still dont work for me. I dont want to spend eons troubleshooting. And thats before some games like apex, genshin etc that just dont support it at all, due to DRM. I know that the true primary life need, Genshin of course, CAN be played, I know that no-one has ever been banned for doing so, but still, it is trouble, and TECHNICALLY a risk so I just play it comfy on my ally XD
