For people outside the US, this is a classic example and by no means a rarity.
@VeroniqueB99 this is why we plan to move to Canada before retirement
@michelin Anyone who can should...
@VeroniqueB99 @michelin
Careful with that. We have our own mini-me version of Trump in the form of Pierre Poilievre, a 'conservative' who is almost certain be elected with a majority because "woke".
@clintruin @michelin Facking hell....
@clintruin @VeroniqueB99 @michelin But, as far as I understand it from a EU perspective, in #Canada you still will have checks&balances, even if he gets elected.
@wettach @VeroniqueB99 @michelin
Such as they are...our House of Commons is modeled after the British System for all intents and purposes.
@clintruin @VeroniqueB99 @michelin
There goes my plan B.
@clintruin @VeroniqueB99 @michelin oh noo… Canada was my last hope. Europe will be governed completely by fascist in only few years.
@leonid @VeroniqueB99 @michelin
What should be terrifying to Canadians is that PoiLIEvre will be in power alongside Trump, who has recently called us the 51st state. With roughly 20 percent of the country being traitorous assholes who want to join the States, I fear--deeply--for Canadian sovereignty.
And for Canadians:
WHEN we are taken over by the US it will be because the Canadian people ask for it, and they'll ask for it because they will be choreographed to ask for it.
But they will.
@clintruin @VeroniqueB99 @michelin fascism seems to be a pandemic
@leonid @clintruin @michelin there are a few countries still resisting, New Zeland, France among others.... but as a whole the entire world is shifting right....
@clintruin @leonid @VeroniqueB99 the percentage of Canadians who want to join the US haven't really increased since the 60s though, so hopefully it can't really go up much
@VeroniqueB99 @michelin at the risk of stating the obvious, most countries, including Canada, aren't thrilled about retirement-age immigrants, because policymakers prefer to have people who will contribute to the economy. if you intend to immigrate, do it sooner rather than later.
@ireneista @VeroniqueB99 @michelin I'd like to add that moving to a country with a working health care system only once you think you need one, is a bit of a douche move.
That's why here in Germany it's close to impossible to move from private health insurance back to regular health insurance.
A plan for avoiding a healthcare bankruptcy that depends on immigrating to Canada?
Realistically, here are your options: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada.html
@michelin @VeroniqueB99 I really wish that were in the cards for us. Vancouver and Montreal are wonderful.
@michelin @VeroniqueB99 You don’t just “move to” Canada. We have immigration laws too.
Unless you’re a doctor, you’re probably not “moving to Canada.”
Sorry.
@michelin @VeroniqueB99 So you will profit of other's people taxes. very progressive. I'm impressed.
@VeroniqueB99 rapacious, health care, if you can call it that.
@wilpercy yes. Predatory as far as I'm concerned.
@VeroniqueB99 still working health insurance system is communism.
@clovis Don't tell me, tell the US' folks.I'm having kind of a working insurance system and I'm very happy about to don't sell my house for insulin, cancer treatment or athlete's foot.
@VeroniqueB99 Gosh. I hope this person doesn't kneel during the national anthem.
@MasterMischief whether they do or not, nothing's gonna change... in fact the real hasn't even started yet!!
@briansullivan ...that's the word.
@VeroniqueB99 I don’t understand how the US insurance system can fail at such a classic case while the same case in Germany just works.
In Germany, after the cancer is defeated, you can continue building your life almost from the same financial position you had before cancer.
That is what happened in my family, and the insurance and the pension system even paid for rehab.
No life savings lost, because protection against such high damage, low probability risks is just what insurance is for.
@ArneBab It works in EVERY other democratic country.
In France, you'd paid NOTHING if you have cancer. Period. Not the chemo, not the operations/radiation, hospitaliztion $0. There are so many countries that place health as a human right but not the US.
@VeroniqueB99 @markus @ArneBab And quite intentional sabotage and privatisation by stealth over 14 years of Tory rule
@VeroniqueB99 @markus @ArneBab The news tells people they want to leave the EU, they want to leave the EU. The news tells them they want private healthcare, they all start saying they want private healthcare. smh watching it. Just enough didn't buy it, just enough to elect Labour, but I don't fancy our chances with Musk and <checks '90s Neighbours IMDB page> Holly Valance for some reason moving on us like a bitch.
@freequaybuoy @markus @ArneBab
doesn't sound ideal indeed...
@VeroniqueB99 @markus @ArneBab Well, it's still far better than the States (and boy am I being schooled just how much this week ), and I still count our blessings (the tabloid induced braying has quietened down on that front at least), just fear we'll still end up like the States.
@freequaybuoy @markus @ArneBab
I really hope you guys become more 'european' rather than 'americans' for all your sakes... I've heard stories about UK hospitals that made me shudder...
@VeroniqueB99 @markus @ArneBab That's exactly my hope. I mean we were, but... damn nationalists.
It's a funny thing, either side of Europe you've got these two imperial embers, Britain and Russia, fighting tooth and nail not to be part of the continent they're on, to be something special, superior, yet every effort in that respect only causes grief, hardship and conflict.
@VeroniqueB99 @markus @ArneBab Oh, and thanks!
@freequaybuoy @markus @ArneBab
That is so true... the embers of imperial once great countries...
@VeroniqueB99 @markus @ArneBab And yet they could be greater - modern, progressive, advanced. It's not even like they were that fixated on the past, Britain at least, it seemed we were largely getting past it, and then the bitter, the small minded, the decrepit, the weasely hateful few consciously and actively dragged us back in a pointless, senseless monumental act of mindless vandalism.
@freequaybuoy @markus @ArneBab
Exactly right...
@VeroniqueB99 @markus @ArneBab If you don't know it, this is an excellent analysis of Russia's "identity crisis" as Vexler puts it, pinpointed in Nikolai Gogol's novel, Dead Souls.
https://youtu.be/V6UiEXrVrvg?si=ygWkJ4R0fHglJ_F8
@freequaybuoy (I quite like “imperial embers”.)
@markus, and AIUI it's (often) the same greedy coproate interests influencing things here as in the USA. ---- them and ---- those who they've bought (typically Tories/Reform).
@VeroniqueB99 @ArneBab Scotland here, brain tumour out my head 4 years ago, checkup MRI scans every 6 months for life, and 4 anti epilepsy pills (2 medications) per day. So far cost me €0. Estimated cost for the rest of my life €0.
@VeroniqueB99 @ArneBab Yes we do pay it in our taxes... and we actually pay a lot less... and EVERYONE gets healthcare! It’s such a messed up country I can’t even begin to understand why folk tolerate it. The first time Trump won the election he actually lost by 2.9 million votes, and they try to explain the system to you as if that justifies the absurdness of it. Odd country. A lot of nice people there though
@kDelta And as nod to some common sense: about 750.000 people who voted for Trump against Biden did not vote for Trump against Harris.
Sadly about 12 Million people who voted for Joe Biden did not vote for Kamala Harris.
So Trump still won despite losing followers.
@kDelta @VeroniqueB99 @ArneBab prevention cheaper than cure right? (but less profitable)
@VeroniqueB99 @kDelta @ArneBab
> you'll get "yeah but you're paying it in taxes!"
What's the US government spending on healthcare compared to other countries
@VeroniqueB99 @kDelta @ArneBab this always annoys me. We live in a society, which is the definition of socialism. It's really just where we choose as the edge of the tribe that people are arguing about (household, family, friends, street, village, town, state, country, planet (if anyone ever settles in the moon or Mars), etc.
