Yet another annoyance that follows us around the web: “Sign in with Google”

You can disable these prompts, but Google buried the option:

Manage your Google Account ⇢ Security ⇢ You connections to third-party apps & services (“See all connections”) ⇢ Settings (gear icon) ⇢ Google Account sign-in prompts: OFF

“Sign in with Google” prompts even appear if you are not signed in — and when you don’t even have a Google Account. (screenshot example: Medium in a new private browser window displays a rather larger prompt)

@andrewe Wouldn't that leave you unable to login on some sites though?

@harry_wood Nope. This just disabled the very large Google prompt with your name and email. In this example, there is still a “Sign in” button on Medium and I can select from a number of single sign on options ((including Google).

@ipd Pluralized so I will assume we are referring to the Google team that thought this was a good idea? 🙃

@andrewe Good grief that was difficult to find. Sure, my page was not in English but also it was just reaaaaally well hidden down a path of things you don't usually dig into, and I'm a person who digs into things for fun!

(Oh, also, alt text for the image: Image is a zoomed in screenshot of a Google dialogue box prompting you to log into Medium via Google.)

@sinituulia I need to get into the habit of using ALT. Thank you for the reminder!

@andrewe Unfortunately the option to disable it only works if you have a Google account and are signed into it. For everyone else, it’s just another annoyance. 😖

@andrewe much easier to just kill it with ublock origin…

@chkuendig Not everyone uses an ad or content blocker extension.

@andrewe yeah, just wanted to point out that by making the setting so difficult to find many people will probably hide it in ways google probably likes even less than disabling it in the setting.

@andrewe if you are signed in, that is. Here I don't have a Google-Account signed in and can't stop this Prompts
