Lots of PCs are poised to fall off the Windows 10 update cliff one year from today
Windows 10 is by far the most-used version of Windows, and support ends soon.
So Microsoft wants to send millions of perfectly good machines to the landfill ... why?
They can't just produce a Windows 10-select edition that is backwards compatible?
Is there some inherent reason that *software* has to be part of the death of the planet?
In my experience it is not true that *all* support ends after the announced date. A windows 7 machine I have continues to receive updates.
@number6 @arstechnica with the understanding that I'm already off windows. BS. Microsoft has not released any security updates outside ones that are absolutely critical. Windows 7 is not secure at this point in any way shape or form. And no one should be on Windows 10 after they stop releasing security updates for it. The simple fact of the matter is get the f*** off of Windows. You shouldn't need to buy a new system if all you're doing is browsing and other light work.
@arstechnica make a change. Buy an #apple Mac or use #Linux ...
@arstechnica yes and to be honest I really, really do not want to use Windows 11 or any microsoft products anymore :(
@tomtrottel @arstechnica I hear win10 iot LTSC is supported till 2032. Just sayin.
@ilpalazzo @tomtrottel @arstechnica
I actually encourage people to play chicken with MS and NOT upgrade. If market share of Win10 stays around where it is a year from now, for example, what will they do?
@ilpalazzo @tomtrottel @arstechnica
And "upgrade" is a loose term. Downgrade in terms of UI Usability for certain.
@arstechnica If you are looking for a "looks like windows" linux distribution, I recommend Linux Mint or Fedora Cinnamon.
@JoeBecomeTheSun @arstechnica no one is looking for that, because no one is looking for sound that doesn't work, display drivers that don't work, networking that doesn't work...
@MisterWanko @JoeBecomeTheSun @arstechnica In most cases, this isn't true. And in this particular case, Linux probably works fine while Windows doesn't.
@nakal @JoeBecomeTheSun @arstechnica In most cases, this is definitely true, and in this case, it's also true. "Looks like" never equals "works like", and never will.
@MisterWanko @JoeBecomeTheSun @arstechnica You really have not seen how well hardware works with Linux. More platforms are supported, more CPUs, much older hardware is still working even from Win 3.1 times.
It is simply not true, what you think.
I have a blacklist of chipset vendors who I avoid, because they intentionally break stuff for free software or make low quality components. Maybe that's what you mean.
@nakal @MisterWanko @arstechnica If you want to revive old hardware there is always puppy linux, but because of their security practices I couldn't recommend it for daily use on a computer that doesn't need it. Always disable the root account and demand a password every time sudo is used. As for Wifi cards I recommend Intel Wifi cards because Realtek Wifi cards do not work well with free software and the Linux Kernel.
@JoeBecomeTheSun @MisterWanko @arstechnica I have bad experience with Intel. They have low range and are stripped down chipsets that don't support certain modes like monitor or AP.
Realtek and Ralink always worked for me. Even better is Atheros. But I absolutely wouldn't recommend any Broadcom chipsets. They have been most painful to me.
@nakal @JoeBecomeTheSun @arstechnica making my point for me though ... no one really thinks about chipsets when they use Windows.
@MisterWanko @JoeBecomeTheSun @arstechnica When you want quality, you need to take a look at the chipsets. Those chipsets also work as intended (as crappy as they are). You won't miss anything if you don't love good tech.
And I want to remind you that perfectly fine PCs are not supported on Windows 11. I have a MacBook Pro with i7, 256 GB SSD and Retina display. It's not supported by Apple. I need to have Linux on it.
What about Raspberry Pis, all mobile phones? No Windows on them, only Linux
@nakal @MisterWanko @arstechnica It is possible to run Windows on ARM on a Raspberry Pi, just that it is slow and not officially supported.
Windows 10 has been awful - an absolute clusterfuck of 'the user is the product.'
Windows 11 is pure malware. Microsoft should be facing criminal charges for releasing it, let alone forcing it on people.
@arstechnica I've already made plans for a move to Mac and to turn the aging Win10 PC into a unix server.
