@arstechnica Reconstruct Louisiana. Expel their senators and reps, declare martial law.

@arstechnica > "We've never felt so unsure of our future," an employee added. "Like, why am I here? Why am I doing this anymore? Because you're just so stifled and you are not helping people."

That, unfortunately, is exactly the point. Those who can help feel stifled by these draconian restrictions and they eventually give up.

@arstechnica Public health services officially banned from promoting public health.

We need third parties, protected by first amendment, stepping up.

@arstechnica “We're really talking about deaths”

Their promotion of anti-vaccine abuse is one of the better reasons for destroying the and culture,.

@arstechnica

Let's invert Hanlon's Razor. Say instead,

"Never attribute to stupidity that which is adequately explained by malice."

The makers of these awful policies *want* to cause the death and suffering.

They *need* the chaos.

@murodegrizeco I think you vastly under-estimate the very real stupidity of many right-wing Americans, including leaders. While what you're saying is definitely true for many people, for Louisiana politicians it's just what was ladled out to them in Sunday school. They really are this stubbornly and arrogantly ignorant.

@tphinney this world. I tell ya. Superstitions are still rampant.

@Luke Yep, especially in places like that. Religion is a poison to reason in many places, especially where it flows so freely and richly through the body politic.

@arstechnica@mastodon.sociaThe increased stupidity in the U.S. is going to lead to a high mortality rate and lower life span!

@SimpleMan It already has. Our life expectancy has been in decline for years now, while maternal and infant deaths and preventable illness and infirmity are up. At least half our Covid deaths were avoidable. We are very literally killing ourselves. All so that a tiny fraction of our people can gain obscene wealth and power at everyone else's expense. It's one of the most disgusting episodes of human history that will ever be recorded.

@SimpleMan Stupid is never free. It always has a price.

@arstechnica It will. Louisiana is one of the worst-run states in the US, and well below the administrative and scientific standards of many whole countries. They just can't seem to get it right there, and the main reasons are cultural. They have no good excuse.

@arstechnica Why aren't the honest and just go straight to concentration camps?
If you hate your people and want them dead, that's how it's done.

@arstechnica will never vacation in a red state

@arstechnica
Smart people will still get the vaccines. Darwin will take care of the rest. The tragedy is not that those adults will die, this is what they voted for, it's that their children will also die.

@arstechnica Can doctors and healthcare providers not sue on the grounds that this policy amounts to medical malpractice? Are they just going to comply? Doesn't ANYONE have the guts to call out and ignore these loser politicians? What am I missing?

@arstechnica

The year: 2500

All is quiet around Sol.

A single beacon broadcasts a message from Europa:

THIS STAR SYSTEM IS SET ASIDE AS A MEMORIAL - PLEASE DO NOT APPROACH. HERE LIES HUMANITY, A SPECIES THAT DIED TRAGICALLY OF INSANITY. DETAILS FOLLOW...

Various aliens decode the message every now and then, and, shaking their heads (or equivalent appendages/gestures), fly around the star to seek more interesting places.
