Hey Fediverse, what do you think is the biggest difference between Mastodon and *key apps?
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social uhhh... reactions with emoji...?
@atomicpoet the number of third party clients
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social biggest one I see are default post length limits, and markdown (aka MFM) in Calckey.
But the biggest difference is the flexibility of the deck mode. Madison's deck mode is nowhere near as flexible. Oh yeah, can't forget the widgets, and cloud storage space... And and and....
@atomicpoet What even are the "user backfilling" and "deep threads" features that your comparison chart talks about?
@steve Calckey displays comments as a tree.
Mastodon only recently introduced threading. It’s not available on all servers, and it’s very simple.
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social oh, I also forgot the clip feature of Calckey.
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social For me:
- Incorporating local into home timeline is awesome
- Having Socal timeline for when I don't want local too
- MFM is great
- Character count in posts.
- Quote tooting
- The default is not deck. Deck layout columns are too narrow for me.
- customization is high.
@atomicpoet
Mastodon seems more stable to me. Could be seen as a positive for either one depending on software preferences (kinda like how some people prefer Arch and others prefer Debian)

the extravaganza
@atomicpoet Ok I’m giving it a go. My first impression is a lot more options just on the web interface!
@atomicpoet i like *key, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of servers that run it, compared to mastodon. I used to have an account on a *key instance but it shut down and i wasn't sure where to move because the few *key instances that exist are mostly for japanese speakers. A lot of *key software is also in sort-of-early development which caused things to break more often for me.
@atomicpoet Performance. *Key apps and website is still buggy and slow. It's fun but not for daily use just yet.
@josheron If you're referring to calckey.social, the slowness is due to massive traffic recently.
Bugs, they are present.
@atomicpoet yep, I know .social is growing recently, so it was expected. I'm thankful for the efforts the admins are doing to escalate the server. The same happened to me when joined pixelfed.social before.
Other than that, loving the Calckey and Pixelfed
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social user interface style imo
