I just asked Jay Graber, CEO of , three questions:

1. How much will it cost to operate a BGS?

2. Will AT protocol have applications beyond microblogging?

3. In your estimation, how much of the network will be PDS-to-PDS communication?

I hope she answers.

@atomicpoet Your second question is answered in the blog post.

Chris Trottier

@ekana Got it! Okay, that makes things much more interesting.

This indeed is a competing protocol with ActivityPub.

@atomicpoet @ekana How does it compare with Matrix? If they can create custom lexicons, instant messaging would be possible too. I remember reading that Matrix didn't meet their needs when they were evaluating protocols before building ADX, which became AT protocol now.

@viktor @atomicpoet A lot of people use Twitter DMs as a serious means of communication, especially influencers. But DM's are for sure gonna be added to the "app.bsky" lexicon so I'm wondering if that's gonna be a common layer or something. I imagine it will be e2e as well.

@ekana @viktor I don't think DMs will be added. Dorsey doesn't want them. He says you should be using Signal for DMs.

@atomicpoet @viktor Dorsey also apparently wanted to launch with zero moderation tools but Jay insisted they create at least something before further invites. So he is a strong voice on the board, but he's not final say and I swear I read somewhere that they were gonna add them
