Will it blend? With a fixed 16-color palette, ninjas blend easily into their environment.

"Shadow Knights" (id Software, 1990)

Second level of "Shadow Knights" (1991). The ninja is standing next to a Willow Tree in glorious 16-color EGA. There are some bushes(?) to the left and a rock wall to the right. There's a red enemy ninja on the top of the rock wall, and a blue one in a lower platform.
Now the ninja is standing on a small platform next to the rock wall, and his black/gray garment blends into the orange/brown/gray colors of the wall. There's one red and one blue ninja enemy on the platform at the top of the rock wall. There are some trees partially visible there as well.

Shortly after "Shadow Knights" (1990), id Software used the same engine to do "Dangerous Dave in the Haunted Mansion" (1991).

Neither is meant to represent what PC hardware could do at the time. Both are EGA when VGA was readily available, and both do PC Speaker beeps when proper sound cards were becoming a thing.

But you can fit both in a single floppy disk, and run them on most PCs of the time. And they do make good use of hardware limitations. 💾

Intro screen for "Dangerous Dave in the Haunted Mansion" in 16-color EGA. Dave is grinning, while wearing a red cap and holding a shotgun. There's a ghost behind him and a mansion in the background. The red cap has no modern connotations. We have no information about Dave's political views.
Inside the mansion. There are two platform levels visible, and some doors. Dave is reloading his shotgun (you have infinite ammo, but have to reload every 8 shots). Someone had fun drawing those funny-shaped cacti...🤔
Dave just got mauled by a zombie. A small "zoomed in" animation box appears whenever he's killed.

Both "Shadow Knights" (1990) and "Dangerous Dave in the Haunted Mansion" (1991) were published by Softdisk on their bi-monthly "Gamer's Edge" disk magazine.

id Software became famous for pushing the state of the art with Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake, but their thing in the early days – and before as Softdisk employees – was putting out games at a regular pace. 🏭
