8x8 Font Advent Calendar 2024 Day 17
Chylos
GEOS is a massively underappreciated piece of computing history providing usable Mac-like UI on 8-bit machines with a fraction of the available power.
It was also home to many great proportional and varied-sized bitmap fonts including this absolute gem found tucked away in a Glenn Holmer's "Cenbe Font Catalog" PDF.
I couldn't find any information beyond this such as the designer.
@damieng I had a whole disk of "extra geowrite fonts" when I was a kid. I should see if I can find that, and extract all the Geos fonts
@foone He has a DiskWrangler tool that's good for exploring the contents of those disc images https://www.lyonlabs.org/commodore/
There's a video of it in action at https://www.lyonlabs.org/commodore/DiskWrangler.mp4
@damieng @foone There's also a web app that can explore over 1000 fonts:
https://www.lyonlabs.org/geofont/
It's about to be upgraded with the ability to download selected fonts on a disk image (final testing in progress):
https://www.lyonlabs.org/temp/geofont-dlsize2.mp4
@damieng @foone The completed version is now live:

Bug reports welcome!
@damieng @foone ...and bug-fixed! \o/ Downloading certain combinations of fonts would trigger a bug in the sector allocation routine and a Bad Thing would happen. Hopefully repaired.

@foone @damieng There are a lot in Dick Estel's collection in geoSpecific:

Also, the TPUG GEOS collection includes over two dozen font disks:

@cenbe Great to see you on here, thanks for the links.
Looking forward to trying out your download tool, some really great bitmap fonts in there.
