@danyoder I'm still mad about Teenage Bounty Hunters
@nicegnome And #Archive81… IDK what they think they're doing, exactly. No one is going to want to invest time and energy into new shows unless they're obvious blockbusters.
@danyoder I think they are too concerned with the ROI of individual shows and not enough concern about the increasing ill-will towards the brand each time they make us love a show and then cancel it early.
I also have a feeling they are relying too much on their predictive trend analyses when making these decisions!
@nicegnome @danyoder The funny thing is, all this show-cancelling on network TV *cough cough* Fox *cough* is what drove us to Netflix originals in the first place!
@jasonrush @danyoder Sarah Connor!!
@nicegnome @danyoder Aww man, Sarah Connor. Still hurts. That was the last straw I think. We never watched Fox again after that.
@jasonrush @danyoder Peak Brian Austin Green
@nicegnome @danyoder To this day that's what I think of Brian Austin Green as. I can't even imagine him in 90210.
@jasonrush @nicegnome I only just now learned who he was—I never watched that particular show—but I appreciate the sentiment! For me, the closest analog is probably Bryan Cranston and Malcom In The Middle/Breaking Bad.
@danyoder @nicegnome Oh that's right! I forgot about Malcolm in the Middle! Too funny!
@danyoder @jasonrush Oh I never watched Breaking Bad, was it also cancelled early?
@nicegnome @jasonrush No, I meant more in terms of an actor that was/is culturally associated with one thing but is associated with something completely different for a minority.
Thankfully Breaking Bad was allowed to finish gracefully. But that's instructive in terms of what Netflix gets wrong here: Breaking Bad wasn't initially a big hit, either: the season 1 finale had only 1.5M viewers (in contrast, Sarah Conner had 8M that same year—wow). But the series finale had over 10M viewers.
@danyoder @jasonrush oh I'm not too sure Brian Austin Green is actually culturally associated with anything but I'm a big fan!
@nicegnome I think that's exactly right. They seem to be dramatically undervaluing their own brand. I don't know why I'm surprised.
