people dumping on Section 31 are the enemies of fun
The “well actually” responses to this need a smidge of self awareness
@flargh @AlsoPaisleyCat Well, TBH it's not very good. The characters and whatnot were great, but the writing, dialogue, plot, and some of the editing was marginally below average. The wife and I enjoyed it somewhat, but it was definitely derived from a TV script and needed more attention to detail. But we all have our likes and dislikes :)
Fun enough to watch more than once and for me that means it merits better than the social media pile-on it’s been subjected to.
I still rank it ahead of The Final Frontier, Nemesis and Into Darkness — none of which I want to rewatch at all.
At this point, I would take more pleasure in rewatching this than Generations and possibly TMP, both of which were snoozing disappointments after high expectations.
I would have preferred if Kim & Lippoldt had kept the reins, with another director, but it’s fine. I’d rather seen Yeoh doing wire work Chinese cinema style marital arts and less splicing in the fight scenes.
But I’m completely infatuated with the Chrysanthemum-brooch warp-capable space station so there’s that. My ship/station nerd self has been well satisfied.
And I enjoy roller coaster of the camp and fun much better than the ridiculous indulgence of the dune buggy scene injected into Nemesis or the motorcycle scene into Beyond - neither of which made any sense other than to bolster the action hero aspirations of their principal actors.
@AlsoPaisleyCat @tylerknowsnothing @flargh It was worse than some of the reviews! There has to be a very special lack of moviemaking talent at work to start with the premise of Section 31, add Michelle Yeoh to it, and end up something that not only isn’t Trek, but is less watchable than Into Darkness.
Forget the “movie” aspect. There’s really no excuse for a TV script this bad in 2025. So many examples of brilliant TV after the turn of the century and this creative team has absorbed none of it.
@flargh except it isn’t fun. It *should* be fun. I wanted it to be fun… but it was not.
@flargh So are they gonna kidnap and torture me because I don't want to see the Evil Federation movie? Yeah, pass and fuck everyone involved.
@flargh We enjoyed it.
@flargh well actually, I haven’t watched it so I have no opinion.
@flargh I enjoyed it. Not the greatest Trek ever, but I could easily name a dozen TNG episodes that are worse. And it has Michelle Yeoh. Anything she does is worth watching.
@flargh glad you enjoyed it. I wanted to, gave it a go bounced off hard. I couldn’t get past the awful, borderline racist, Irish accent on the comedic Vulcan character. A trope I am so well and truly done with. If the actor had just used his normal voice I could have enjoyed it.
@slaine Still trying to understand what backstory they're filling in on the Nanokin by making them sound like they're always after me Lucky Charms cereal.
