I have a favor to ask if you're outside the United States. What does Apple Maps show you for the Gulf of Mexico? Let me know where you are and, if applicable, what your OS settings are for region and language. Screenshots appreciated.
Google, to their credit, has issued a document describing exactly what people should see from Google Maps: “People using Maps in the U.S. will see ‘Gulf of America’, and people in Mexico will see ‘Gulf of Mexico’. Everyone else will see both names.”
Apple, unfortunately, has adopted the new name, at least for US users, without any comment.

@gruber Would a VPN help test?
@Magi Nah, I think we have enough answers at this point.
@gruber Located in UK, all settings set to UK (region, language, keyboard, etc). For now, showing Gulf of Mexico.
@PeterGracar @gruber you might want to try zooming in a bit more my friend (or not, because it may be depressing).
In London. Same settings as you, except on my iPhone.
@gruber here in the UK, it’s still Gulf of Mexico. Region settings: UK
@mgibeault @imyke @gruber
It has. They did that yesterday.
@gruber I'm in the UK, MacOS 14.7 (en-gb) and the Maps app says "Gulf of Mexico"
@tdp_org try zooming in a bit more
@gruber In the UK - region UK, language English Shows Gulf of Mexico
@gruber Confirm that here in the UK, Google shows both names
@gruber It is still Gulf of Mexico here in the UK. I suspect Apple has just changed it in the US to placate Orange Nero.
They were probably too embarrassed to make any announcements about the change.
@gruber Apple with not providing insight into a decision .
I woulda been more surprised if they did. Thanks for sharing! I haven't had time to follow this very closely, and appreciate the coverage.
@gruber Correctly shows 'Gulf of Mexico' here in Canada (and all Canadian regional settings), also showing correctly when connected to company (UK) VPN.
@gruber I’m in Rumanía and Apple Maps shows Gulf of America
@gruber they still haven’t closed out my report, so I’m sure they’ll get around to changing it back any day now
@gruber I wonder how many of these requests they got.
Maybe you could ask for a similar favor from your audience in the US to all submit one?
@sfrazer434 @gruber I did the same thing!
@gruber though a funny thing does happen if you switch back to the reporting app:
@gruber mastodon doesn’t like mp4? How about an Imgur link:
@gruber I reported this using the Report an Issue… option. Such horseshit.
@gruber Kind of surprised Apple hasn't released a "We use the name published by your local country's geographic naming department; if they haven't specified one we use the one published by the country where the place is"
Or basically, "if you don't like Gulf of America, take it up with the US BGN"
@gruber
Canada = Mexico
@gruber iOS 18.3.1 (22D72) on Chile, with language set to Spanish, and region set to United Kingdom (complicated story) but metric system.
@gruber Here in New Zealand I am seeing Gulf of Mexico with Gulf of America in brackets.
@gruber On MacOS - 15.3 (24D60) it depends on the Region selected in the Language & Region System Setting.
US (Gulf of America) vs. Ireland (Gulf of Mexico) below
@gruber on Apple Maps if I just go there it says Gulf of America but if I zoom out a bit it changes to Gulf of Mexico. I’m in the US.
@gruber In Belgium it’s still only Gulf of Mexico. IOS 18.3.1 16 Pro
@gruber This is a dumb name change by trump, ONLY political post cuz politics suck.
@gruber It says Gulf of Mexico in Korean. I'm in South Korea and region is set accordingly
@gruber Still Gulf of Mexico in Germany on Sonoma with primary language English.
@gruber mine says Gulf of Mexico. In Poland, region set to Poland, language is US English and my iCloud account is US based (probably doesn’t matter but thought I would throw that detail in)
@gruber macOS 15.3, region: Austria, language: English (US)
@gruber Canada, “English (Canada)”, “Gulf of Mexico”.
@gruber “Gulf of Mexico”, using Finnish UI, location and regional settings.
@gruber I'm in Ireland running MacOS 15.3.1
Region = Ireland
Language = English (Ireland)
@gruber From Sweden. Swedish language / region. ”Always show map text in Swedish” turned off.
