Genuinely, if you are rolling out generative AI features, and not talking about the ethical or environmental implications of them, you have entirely failed to change the industry in a way that only Apple could.
Privacy is great, but that's just one piece.
@jamesthomson I’m sure we’ll be told how it’s all fine and Apple is green and loves recycling and is going to be net-zero by 2030 through mumble mumble mumble
@craiggrannell @jamesthomson Apple literally told us all their environmental information in their last event. Not much has changed since then. Let’s wait until their next one.
@jamesthomson
So far, they’re pretty much describing the Twitter algorithmic timeline.
@jamesthomson probably be similar greenwashing video Apple did with the FineWoven accessories. And look at how well that turned out…
@jamesthomson I note they haven't mentioned sustainability yet in this keynote
@jamesthomson the whole thing feels so gross tonally. No mention of the impact or the ethics, and the big feature is… you can send your friends a poem that you didn’t write?
@amyinorbit This is absolutely the worst case of what I imagined for this part of the presentation.
@jamesthomson yup. I don’t even understand who is apparently clamouring for this outside of like, the tech press who keeps saying everyone wants this.
@amyinorbit @jamesthomson I thought the same thing about the poem, then there was this part. The girl in the demo said she would have had to call her Mom if Siri hadn’t helped her. The horror!
@jamesthomson I want them to do a follow up with Mother Earth, see how that's going.
Thought it might have to be SNL to be done right.
@jamesthomson no mention on how the models were trained. Maybe it was considered to nuance and will be mentioned in state of the union?
@jamesthomson
"Oh don't worry. We're not BUILDING all the new data centers (yet). We're just USING all the data centers that need tons more electricity and water and pump more carbon into the air.
We're Apple."
@jamesthomson Haven't they done that by saying “almost" everything is local on your device?
But I agree, it's a rare miss, considering how much they are pushing environmental issues usually. It should’ve been part of the chart listing important key aspects of “Apple Intelligence.”
@jamesthomson This comes from the same tech industry whose product reviews will tell you what features a gadget has, but not if you can repair it or what privacy implications it has.
As readers and consumers, it’s our responsibility to lean and communicate what we value.
@jamesthomson Please tell us how overpriced fragile devices designed to be incompatible with most standards changed the industry. They are doing the same as Apple, AI it's just marketing.
@jamesthomson 80% of what they showed is on-device, making it very energy efficient?
@jamesthomson Don’t forget the legal implications, particularly for code completion. Machine-generated code is not copyrightable. And if the LLM happens to regurgitate a verbatim chunk of GPL code, it could pull the whole project under the GPL. That whole thing is a nightmare.
@jamesthomson They're late to the game. No time, have to rush.
