Hey! Here's an article I wrote last year that I'm re-posting now for no particular reason. https://www.wired.com/story/best-substack-alternatives/
I can always count on Substack to do something shitty that makes my articles about them relevant again.
@jhpot “Flawless as their reputation may be,” lol
@jhpot Oh no, now what
How about just creating a WordPress blog?
@mastodonmigration Email gets tricky! It’s really hard to not get flagged as spam. I might explore that for myself at some point, though.
What do you mean "email gets tricky?"
@mastodonmigration Newsletters are great because, try as we may, the public never figured out RSS in a big way but everyone uses email. Sending emails is important if you want to grow your audience, but sending from a server you control often means getting filtered out by spam guards. It’s a huge hassle, which makes it hard to recommend to journalists and others who just want to run a newsletter without having to manage a tech company
Not an expert in this stuff at all, but this is the link for writers on how to create a WordPress newsletter:
@mastodonmigration Aha! I think this didn’t exist when I wrote the article in 2022. If I ever have the chance to do an update I’ll look into this (I wish I could use it on a self-hosted blog though)
Does going with WordPress.com solve the spam problem?
@mastodonmigration Potentially!
Ah that's interesting! In the sucky sense.
You'd have to somehow convince subscribers to whitelist your email address off the bat, but a lot of people would certainly miss that.
@jdp23 Evergreen
@jhpot hahaha I almost said that too but then I thought "timely!" by itself worked better. but yes, evergreen too!
@jhpot Nice to see Ghost first out of the blocks there. I've been using it for two years at https://bl.ag and am very happy.
@jhpot your jib sir, I like the cut of it.
https://ghost.org/ looks really nice! Thanks for the brief overview!
