Back in 1994, a writer named John C
Dvorak wrote a book called "Dvorak Predicts". I sat & read it in a Barnes & Noble. I was only 24yo & even to me, it was so obviously & hilariously wrong, I bought it for posterity.

Here's some of the amazing predictions he made back then: 😜

John C. Dvorak was the original linkbaiting media troll. Here's a video of him outlining how he intentionally created controversy to drive engagement for his articles.

@kurtsh Jeez. Even Nostradamus didn't get everything wrong.

Mind you, there is a difference between being technically correct and predicting what happens in the marketplace.

And Dvorak wasn't entirely wrong about Windows NT, OS/2 and the Pentium on a technical front.

@kurtsh @decryption i remember that guy! If I remember rightly we used to laugh at him when we were working at Apple (which he thought he was right about but then became hilariously wrong) e.g. his reaction to the original Mac “The Macintosh uses an experimental pointing device called a ‘mouse’. There is no evidence that people want to use these things” 🤪

@kurtsh John C Dvorak later became an early podcaster and ended up co-hosting an extremely conspiracy-theory adjacent show, if you wondered where he ended up

@ThermiteBeGiants Yeah, I'm aware of what he's doing these days with No Agenda. I met him a few times back in the day & he often seemed borderline nuts in conversation... but I think that often helps if one wants to be successful in the media & entertainment industry and why he's still around to this day.

@kurtsh I had this book somehow too. I hope no one made investment decisions on the back of his advice.

@kurtsh is there any correct prediction at all?

@luigirenna I don't remember many of his predictions coming true. They were largely based on his religious technology bias but he was also a one of the earliest journalistic trolls - someone who wrote things up to rile up audiences.

Here's a video where they captured John C. Dvorak outlining how he intentionally creates controversy to drive readers to his articles.
