Try this: 
@mad4data You can follow hashtags, and follow people who post to them. The algorithm is just the people you follow who post or repost stuff, so the curation or variety of people you follow affects what you see. I hope you still visit.

One cool thing, is that you can use your Mastodon account to follow users also on other federated platforms (Pixelfed, Friendica, Peertube, etc.). That is really cool!

Following hashtags is great. I follow a couple of obscure-ish ones like #theExpanse and see fun random stuff
When you're building up a list, look at who the people you like are following to find more cool people
You'll see replies to posts that other people won't see, and the same in reverse, and that's a pain point
@mad4data The thing to remember is there's no algorithm, so start following people. You can even follow hashtags. Might want to follow hashtags of the things you're interested in. The more people you follow the richer your feed gets.
Also check out the emojis! Each serve has their own unique ones.
