Quick demo of a bizarre (not Japanese but Korean) text to speech synth known as JetTalk.
So bizarre it comes with it's own effects processor. Yes you heard that right. Your text to speech voice can have reverb and flanger effects applied to it.
@rommix0 is it speaking Korean or is it just really bad at Japanese? :) that second rendition is straight out of a scary anime :P
@zersiax could be either, to be honest. The inflection sounds Japanese.
@rommix0 @zersiax It's Korean for sure. Based on my rusty and pretty basic knowledge of Korean, The first part starts with 음성 합성 목소리를 (.eumseong habseong mogsorireul) which is speech synthesis voices as the object of the sentence? The second sentence says it can do something, but what it can do I do not know. I'm trying to get ChatGPT to help me figure out the meaning based on me sounding it out but I can't quite figure it out. I'm sure it would be possible with the actual synth, to make sure that spelling matches up to the sound.
@rommix0 Haha, seems many old synths tried to differentiate themselves by including effect processors. The old Logox synth for German could do that too, even in stereo! I think Cepstral did that as well.
@MutedTrampet @rommix0 Yeah cepstral had effects as well.
@MutedTrampet Wouldn't it be cool if BeSTspeech had an effects processor.
@rommix0 @MutedTrampet Hey, sorry for butting in, but I have a question? Is it possible for RSynth to be added to
NVDA just like Sam did with NVGT?
@mckensie @MutedTrampet No idea as RSynth was a standalone program. However, What RSynth, SenSyn by Sensimetrics, and DECTalk all have in common is they are all Klatt synthesizers.
For RSynth's case, one would have to recode the program to work as a DLL for Windows or SO for Linux/Android.
@rommix0 @MutedTrampet And I'm going to guess that Sam would be the only one in this case who would have the tools to do this. Also, is it possible to make a version for android for TalkBack users? Doesn't sound impossible right?
@mckensie @MutedTrampet Well whoever. Either Sam or myself depending if it's worth the time.
Now the TalkBack stuff, that's above my pay grade as of now.
@rommix0 @MutedTrampet RSynth is a formant synthesizer right?
@mckensie @MutedTrampet indeed it is. It's technically an open source implementation of Dennis Klatt's KLSYN88 synthesizer.
@rommix0 @MutedTrampet Honestly, it would be another option if synthesizers were to no longer be supported after a certain version of NVDA, not to be confused with NVGT. I almost got them mixed up when writing the first question. Oops!
@mckensie @MutedTrampet Depends. I mean there's people out there like myself figuring out how to interface old synthesizers to work again, and not be officially supported at all.
@rommix0 @MutedTrampet You do have a point. I mean it doesn't sound entirely impossible, and I haven't tagged Sam, but I'm going to assume you don't need NVGT as a shell or back end for the addon, because NVDA relies on Python. Although some people would have prefered doing it like that, but I'm going to guess it won't be as responsive as if you would do it the other way. You can't code an entire NVDA addon in NVGT. I know that for a fact.
@mckensie @MutedTrampet See I'm not as familiar with NVGT like I am with NVDA.
However, since I use Anaconda with python for virtual environments, it's hard to develop with NVDA. I've let other people like Tamas and Sam do that stuff.
@rommix0 @MutedTrampet I should have asked them first, because they know more about this. I'm sure that Sam or Tamas is probably going to be the next ones getting into this conversation. I shouldn't gynx it though lol. I'm good at doing that.
@mckensie @MutedTrampet Yeah you should. I'm sure they got some insight on it.
@rommix0 @MutedTrampet You can judge me if you want, but even though some people don't like RSynth, I actually do because of how it sounds, despite pronunciation glitches.
@mckensie @MutedTrampet I'm not a fan of it. It's too garbly and muffled for my tastes.
As far as wonky synths go, BeSTspeech sounds better to my ear if very robotic.
@rommix0 @MutedTrampet Oh I agree. Someone challenged me to use it for a week or a month as a daily driver, and I accepted it lol.
@rommix0 is that demoed in Klatt's demonstration of speech synthesis recording? It sounds somewhat similar to one I heard in there but I don't remember what they called that one.
@valiant8086 not likely. JetTalk is too new yet, too old and obscure. It shares the same space that acuvoice and cybertalk do.
