@simplex
I dunno who usually writes your articles at your team, but send them my biggest admiration.
Opionated, factual, radical and emotional.

I really haven't seen any other app/website hitting just the right notes when responding, explaining, covering important topics.

@simplex

Firstly, I have been a SimpleX user for about a year. I actively participate in Privacy App discussions on Matrix using both Fractal 8 and Element. I also have several other privacy apps, both mobile and desktop.

Having said that and after reading the Wired article and the ISD report, I think your(SimpleX's) response was uncalled for and misguided.

I think the Wired article was a reasonable appraisal of the opportunity a service like SimpleX provided to groups like neo-nazi's or terrorist's as a rally point.

I also think, given the ISD report was focused on neo-nazi's use of encrypted messaging apps(no mention of SimpleX in particular), it was reasonable that Wired didn't expand to include freedom of speech for journalist's etc.

Finally, I think the response to Wired by your(Simplex's) own developer was a sufficient rebuttal to any concern the broader community should have.

“We never designed groups to be usable for more than 50 users and we’ve been really surprised to see them growing to the current sizes despite limited usability and performance. We do not think it is technically possible to create a social network of a meaningful size in the SimpleX network.”(Poberezkin, Wired, 2024).

@avoca Great you are using it!

For the record, our response published by Wired was taken out of context and an important part of it was not published.

Wired article violated code of journalism ethics as relates to factual reporting and avoiding harm, so a stronger criticism would have been justified.

Attacks on privacy, irrespective of the angle, are a threat to democracy and path to totalitarianism, so being silent would be a mistake.

@simplex

Sorry, I didn't think they attacked the need for 'privacy' per se in any way, but that's just me I guess.

Honestly? A code of journalistic ethics?

@simplex Only absolute retards or some total morons are reading such trashy scumbags vomit like wired.

@MartinBe It is unfortunately not the case, if it were their article wouldn't merit a response. In our bubble of privacy enthusiasts we forget about a real world where 50% of people, many highly intelligent, trust mass media.

Criminal abuses on non-private platforms, and by platforms themselves (look at criminal cases alleging large platforms enabling child abuse), are under-reported, while privacy is vilified.

So shrugging it off would be wrong, it requires ongoing education and responses.

@simplex For me, an editorial office that publishes biased content is not worth the slightest attention. And they are known for pitting people against each other. This is not journalism. This is the bottom with a ton of mud, that a normal person will not bother with.
In other words, a rag. Anyone who reads something like that has only themselves to blame. And don't have much in own head. You just ignore idiots. As the old saying goes.

@MartinBe @simplex Damn true! And bothering or breaking the own head up with such junkyard is absolutely not worth the effort. 👍 Nothing gonna change especially by the people who are reading and believing such "papalapap" writings.

@simplex@mastodon.social lol when I found that article the first reaction is "well it's a compliment for an encrypted messenger imo"
