Back in June 2021 I made a small garden pond out of an old kitchen sink. After taking this photograph I planted “pendulous sedge” (Carex pendula), blue flag iris (Iris versicolour), and rough horsetail (Equisetum hyemale).

Within a year the pond was attracting wildlife such as hover flies and this lovely damselfly.

I was particularly pleased when I spotted a newt larva in June 2022.

🌐 In the past three days, I've switched my #homelab to a new #ReverseProxy! After using #NginxProxyManager and #Zoraxy, I've now moved to #Pangolin.

Pangolin allows me to provide my #selfhosted services from my home lab without needing to open a port in my #firewall. 🔒

Essentially, it's a self-hosted alternative to #CloudflareTunnels, running on a #VPS. Due to the current political situation in the #USA, I preferred not to use Cloudflare.

Pangolin is based on #WireGuard and #Newt, enabling a #certificate-based direct connection after installing a client on the home server. 🔗

I'm extremely satisfied with it and now have no open ports in my private #network! 🎉

Replanting my small garden pond

1/ When I set up my pond nearly 4 years ago I used basket liners that claim to prevent overrunning of the roots. The "pendulous sedge" (Carex pendula) had other ideas. Its roots were almost filling the pond.
2/ All the plants came out in one big lump, leaving the pond almost empty. The pendulous sedge has spread to the ground next to the pond.
3/ Despite there being so little open water there was a newt in the pond.
4/ I put the Iris versicolour and Equisetum hyemale back in the pond, after repotting the Equisetum in a larger container. I'm going to need to be vigilant to stop the sedge reinvading.
