😊

I don't suppose anyone knowledgeable about and their charging mechanisms might have some insight as to what's going on, here...

This is the rechargeable battery for my new (to me) Phillips Velo PDA... It appears to be two cells tap-welded together, with a conductive band close to one end that has a lead going to this mid-point, presumably so the PDA knows it's allowed to recharge this one.

I'd like to recreate it, if possible...

PS: Once you revive a dud battery, it won’t have a great capacity. You can generally get back some of that by cycling it a few times.

I use the Opus BT-C3100 which is a handy device for all sorts of rechargeable chemistries and form factors, including 1865s.

My opus has a refresh option which will do three cycles automatically.

If your rechargeable batteries won’t charge, don’t give up hope. Modern chargers require the battery to have some small bit of voltage to start charging. So if you connect (in parallel +,+ and -,/-) a dud to a good battery for 30 seconds or so, that might be enough.

I built this simple rig and went through a dozen duds and got most of them to bounce back enough to get my Opus to take them. Huzzah!

My DIY trickle #NiMH charger is complete.

I used a battery box from 5V led strip lighting to hold the batteries.

Putting my meter in circuit it read mid 60's milliamp charge per battery.

Here are two pictures. One is me testing it with croc clips connected and the other with permanent USB connection and lots of hotmelt glue holding things in place.

Just trickle charged a really old #NiMH AA battery using a USB connector with crocodile clips on +ve and -ve. The -ve clip goes on the bottom of the cell and the +ve clips onto a little circuit with 1 diode, 3 resistors and an LED. The Diode gets the +ve clip and the 'bottom' of the circuit makes contact with the top (+ve) end of the battery. It is held on by an elastic band as is the -ve clip to bottom of the battery.

I am trying to implement reverse polarity protection for a circuit powered by two NiMH cells.

Using a Schottky diode is too wasteful at such low voltages. It seems a MOSFET is the way to go, and after a deep dive in the Digi-Key parametric search, I think I have found a winner: DMN1019USN.

It is a 12V N-channel MOSFET that has only 41 milliohms when activated with 1.2V at the gate 🤩
