Gourd water bottle, lined with beeswax, leather strap. These are really hard to make, I had to stop selling them in bulk/wholesale through a catalogue. Kept one for myself. #historical #gourd #nature #reenacting

That said, I for some time now, I have been offered the chance to fight for king & country in the War to End all Wars. And I won't lie reenacting that time period has been a curiosity for a while too.
At least it would mean machine sewing some kit.
Reenacting drama.
Racism & sexism is causing issues at large for my reenacting company to the point it might implode. And if it does because people can't take a principled stand to support women or minorities, I am okay with it.
It would mean I might no longer be an 18th century reenactor anymore, which considering I haven't been on the field for 5+ years, isn't as hard to stomach.
While recovering, I've done two evenings of sewing. Feeling pretty good for the progress.
I might not be a great reenactor these days (last event was 2019). However period sewing is more my vibe these days.
This is why I want to learn proper tailoring. To make better kit or historical clothing. It's a good goal, and I think achievable.

Spent the evening doing some reenacting sewing. Started on a simple haversack. I'd cut the pieces around this time last year I think? I haven't done any historical sewing in over 2 years, and this felt right.
Time well spent.
It is amazing that something rather stupid grew over 5 years from a molehill into a massive anxiety mountain.
But I finally scaled the mountain. Perhaps 5 years later than I wanted, but it is a first step.
I used to be in the #reenacting community and (IMO) there should be a 100 year rule of what folks reenact. There are folks under 40 who were on day 1 of OIF. Seems too soon.
Here is a photo of a woman replicating the Roman Strophium, inspired by the Greek Apodesme. It was folded from a single piece of fabric, as in the figure of Aphrodite above.

Sure, there's a heat advisory, but the show must go on. #Pirates and #Privateers program this morning at historical #FortPhoenix in #Fairhaven #Massachusetts.
Today we visited #Tewkesbury and witnessed the fabulously #reenacted and hilariously commentated #BattleOfTewkesbury - it was pretty fabulous to behold, actually.
I have much admiration for everyone who partook as #reenactors and vendors around the festival grounds. What a day! I love the detail that goes into events like these.
Talked to people at Fort Phoenix, #Fairhaven #Massachusetts today about variolation or inoculation to combat The Pox that was running rampant in Boston in 1775. My program, called "Dreadful Medicine" will be held every Thursday afternoon this summer. It covers tooth pulling, blood letting, amputation, and other cures performed by the village barber/dentist during the war. A midwife (Mrs. Fairhaven Person) is also on hand to talk about herbal remedies and assisting with births.
Just in case anyone lives nearby
"Hundreds of Viking re-enactors from all over the UK are set to descend on Flag Fen again at the end of the month for the return of the Viking Festival.
The 2023 festival is set to run for three days from Saturday 29 April – Monday 1 May."
Me while getting a tattoo:
"This was a mistake! What was I thinking? I'm never doing this again!"
Me once it's healed "I love it! It's gorgeous! I want 20 more!" #tattoo #archeology #reenacting #pazyryk
Found this site on #medieval kirtles and surcotes particularly interesting! Good stuff. I love that she shows materials & detail differences.

I've had a sewing project that's been on hold for about 4 years now. Has some personal stuff happen in 2019, and then the pandemic really took me down where depression stopped everything.
But today, I finally cut my fabric. For a very simple 18th century haversack, but it formally marks my first attempt at being a reenactor again.

I'm preparing a new historical program called Dreadful Medicine to be presented weekly at Fort Phoenix in #Fairhaven #Massachusetts during the summer. It will include discussion and demonstrations of medical practices by a barber surgeon around the time of the American Revolution. #history #reenacting #18thcentury #southcoastma #fairhavenma #fortphoenix #barbersurgeon #dentistry
