The Gion Matsuri is Yasaka-jinja's primary festival, culminating with a procession of the shrine's deities through the heart of the city.

To be seen devouring cucumbers was considered disrespectful, openly inviting the displeasure of the god Susanoo (須佐之男/aka Gozu Tennō 牛頭天王).

Yasaka-jinja, home to the Gion Festival.
Ice cold cucumbers are a popular festival snack during the summer months in Japan, but for those participating in the Gion Matsuri it is considered an unlucky item to eat for the duration of the festival.

A folk play featuring Susanoo. The god is enshrined at Yasaka-jinja, and is the Gion Matsuri's principal deity (his Buddhist counterpart is called Gozu Tenno).
