That’s disheartening and short sighted. You build this Fediverse connection even though many are on other platforms - because you want a direct relationship with them that will never go away. And not at the whims of these other platforms.

@tchambers almost absurd from #WordPress
even more with @pfefferle #activitypub plugin supported BY WordPress
@rmdes @tchambers @pfefferle whilst I (and others) feel it is a poor decision I am seeing a downturn generally amongst social media and this is reflected on Mastodon (and the fediverse) with declining interaction and numbers. Social media for a lot of people has peaked. I guess this is one reason for it....
@3dcandy peaked... I'm not convinced.. it has fragmented, more than ever.. that's very true, perhaps it has peaked in the way we knew it in the last 20 years.. but social media is taking forms of its own with new generations (our kids) and the tool is far from peak in my understanding
@rmdes perhaps peaked is the wrong phrase. With several platforms not counting likes and what not it has changed. But - I stand by the numbers that most of the people I work with have seen massive drops generally in 2024 with some seeing 90% engagement drops. Mastodon is probably one of the biggest losers in this, for various reasons. It could be my age as well... but it appears that many have left
@3dcandy @rmdes @tchambers @pfefferle threads is exploding in usage or at least it certainly seems that way
@mrcompletely @rmdes @tchambers @pfefferle it is getting more, but only because it has zero ads. Once the ads start it will decline. However its user base of 400 million or thereabouts pails into nothingness next to 3 billion FB and 2 billion IG users. This fragmentation is what makes it so difficult - posting on 10+ social media outlets is not feasible in the long run, which is possibly why we are having this discussion
@3dcandy @rmdes @tchambers @pfefferle yes I agree with all of that - it's growing off of the toxic collapse of Twitter and right now they're not heavily censoring left political content and there are no ads. At some point you have to think change for the worse is coming.
One social aspect to it i find very notable is that much of the core of what was Black Twitter has relocated there. This is a very powerful social media driver in the US at least.
@mrcompletely @rmdes @tchambers @pfefferle yep totally. I'm in the UK though and it has quickly become another social media platform full of pretty woman posting pics for follows, something that FB did about 10 years ago....
Snapchat is seeing another surge in the UK with people I know as well....
