Anyone know about the youtube-dl drama? Should I switch to yt-dlp? A different fork? Or stick with it?

@Cj yt-dlp is the annointed successor so far as I care. That's where development momentum is. Features work, there's active work happening.

@Cj AFAIU yt-dlp is also a mostly drop-in replacement with similar arguments and features, so it's pretty low-friction from that standpoiont as well.

@dredmorbius @Cj Is youtube-dl over? Or is it still functional enough for a long-time project that uses it occasionally?

@kristinHenry As I noted above, yt-dlp is functionally equivalent, much in the way that earlier software provided compatibility transitions (rsh -> ssh, sendmail -> postfix or exim, for example).

youtube-dl isn't fully dead, and I'm not entirely up-to-date on what the current status is. What I've observed is that yt-dlp seems to be much more widely embraced, it's more actively developed, and projects tend to be switching to it.

I'd be making plans to transition over.

If you're using the youtube-dl library, there might be other considerations. I'm not versed on that.

You're all but certainly putting too much weight on my opinion here, as well 😺

@Cj

@devsecfranklin yeah, well for most sites I throw at it. I had an issue with YouTube, which led me down this rabbit hole.
