If you enjoy using mastodon.social, or our official apps for iOS and Android, or want to support the development of the server software itself, you can donate to our non-profit on Patreon at https://patreon.com/mastodon
@Gargron are you still using OpenCollective?
@boris it’s still here https://opencollective.com/mastodon, and I’d much prefer to give via OpenCollective than Patreon (suits Fediverse and my ideals better), but it’d be nice to know from @Gargron that it’s still a preferred way of donating.
D'oh.
I just boosted Eugen's post. Like there's someone on the 'Verse who might not have seen it.
@Gargron also a less profit orientated option: @Liberapay
Block Meta's federated app and more people will consider making donations.
@beforewisdom @Gargron How to make the fediverse not take off and keep most people on closed services:
@avakining@hachyderm.io @beforewisdom@veganism.social @Gargron@mastodon.social
If FB/INS users are allowed to federate, its users would have exactly less reasons to migrate to open platforms.
@Orca @Gargron @beforewisdom @avakining Those people aren't going to switch anyway, but allowing federation with their platform of choice would strengthen the fediverse and set a precedent for others to consider joining.
@gerowen @Orca @Gargron @avakining
I agree with the idea that Meta's only interest in federation is to make money off of it or destroy it.
@beforewisdom @Orca @Gargron @avakining Random side note, but I've seen a few people mention this federated app from Meta but haven't seen or heard anything about it. Can you educate me or point me to an article? Are they federating they're existing platforms? Making a new one just for federating?
@gerowen @Orca @Gargron @avakining
Marcus,
It is still in development. It will use Instagram account registration, but be a distinct platform. One of the code names is "Threads".
Mastodon is talking about it because Meta has had meetings with owners of bigger Instances and content creators.
@beforewisdom @Orca @Gargron @avakining I thought "Threads" was the Instagram messaging app they killed off? I'll have to do some digging they've probably just revived the name.
@gerowen @Orca @Gargron @avakining
Learn from history or be doomed to repeat it.
Meta is the Microsoft of social media.

@beforewisdom @Gargron yeah I only donate to people vocally opposed to corporate takeover of FOSS and the internet, not people who fancy themselves Zuck 2.0
@Gargron Does Patreon income cover the costs of running a service/platform like this? Just curious, not after details.
@Gargron Subscribed. I use this way too much to not contribute back,
@Gargron
Wäre halt schön wenn Spenden ohne Zwischenwirt möglich wäre. QR-Code mit IBAN wäre schnell und direkt.
@Gargron
Hi Eugen
I did donate, but would have donated more if I had more options. Please consider providing more options; like $2/month or a set amount.
Thanks for all your hard work
@Gargron This is great, last I checked, #Patreon didn't have a way of taking 1 time donations only subscriptions. Please consider #BuyMeACoffee? This service also takes less of your donations when I last checked.
@Gargron done ! Thanks for your work!
@Gargron The UI is solid. It usually takes me a while to figure out how to enable dark mode apps but Mastodon was by far the easiest to navigate. Great job design team
@Gargron I'm a Patreon supporter!
@Gargron I prefer Megalodon. The vanilla app kinda lacks features.
@Gargron do we gotta pay for blue ticks
@Gargron I’m donating to your Open Collective. I hope that’s official and you’re getting the money
@pratik It is official but not as useful for paying full-time employees
@Gargron Ok. So prefer Patreon, I guess. I’m not a fan of their model for content creators though.
@pratik What model?
@Gargron Takes a bigger cut from our donations, right? Compared to Ko-Fi and other service, I mean.
@pratik I see. We're on the legacy plan where it's something like 5%.
@Gargron Great. That’s not too bad. Some have it as high as 12% which is ridiculous. If interested, check out Ko-Fi https://medium.com/@kofi_blog/patreon-or-ko-fi-whats-the-difference-e2ce81a4334e I have no financial stake in it and have only heard from others who use it
@Gargron Sorry that I bother you, but sending money via Paypal does not work atm. Tried it 3 times and received this graphic. Is it possible to donate direct in the Paypal App too? And if, how?
@Gargron is the app open source? If it's a tech stack im familiar with I can help to look at some issues.
