@Wikisteff How about men?
@martinlentink @Wikisteff Men don't have the ovaries. #Slava Ukraini
@Grant_M @Wikisteff Doesn´t mean that they can't use contraceptives... Why does it have to be women's responsibility? 100% of unwanted pregnancies is caused by men's ejaculations....
@martinlentink @Wikisteff I'm agreeing with you 100%
@Wikisteff Are you sure this isn't a parody account? When did Trudeau announce this?
Well, this will bring in the votes for the next election!
@Snowshadow I mean, 6,500,000 followers is a lot for a parody account, no?
@Wikisteff I just now checked 3 news sources and there is nothing on their sites...so this may not be true.
@Snowshadow You think someone forged Trudeau's Twitter account?
https://twitter.com/JustinTrudeau/status/1774109040181735580
@Wikisteff Please don't take offence. I am not saying you are wrong. But in this day and age and with all the nonsense with the MAGAs and our conservative party following int heir footsteps, who knows? That is why I checked breaking news...which is often slow.
I am over cautious sometimes...hopefully that is all it is...
@annecavicchi @Wikisteff You are the second person to send me this link...
Thank you.
@annecavicchi @Wikisteff So the budget will be tabled on the 16th of April, then the feds will work with the provinces to implement it.
The skeptic in me is wondering how Doug Ford will funnel the funds to Weston through Loblaws and Shoppers.
@Snowshadow @Wikisteff It is true – just not big news because it's not implemented yet (and it's been talked about for ages bc it makes sense). See the official government website: https://www.canada.ca/en/department-finance/news/2024/03/government-highlights-next-step-to-universal-access-to-free-contraceptives.html#
@karenlowry @Wikisteff
Yes. I don't know why there would be an announcement today...but who knows right?
@karenlowry @Snowshadow @Wikisteff I cannot believe it was not free to start with. You’re decades behind Europe
@Lassielmr Right? Better late than never, I guess.
Confirmed. From the official Government of Canada website:
@stationkeeper @Snowshadow @Wikisteff
Meanwhile certain other jurisdictions are toying with the idea of re-criminalizing contraception.
@the5thColumnist @Snowshadow @Wikisteff Between this and some stuff that's coming out about the budget - he's gonna get a few votes.
@stationkeeper @the5thColumnist @Wikisteff
Who will get few votes?
@Snowshadow @the5thColumnist @Wikisteff Trudeau. He aint perfect, and probably some of the budget will be pandering a bit, but we're in a decent position as a country and I think there will be more announcements like the contraception one a few months ago, or the announcement he made about tennants bill of rights, or that rent payments will go towards improving credit scores similar to morgage payments.
@stationkeeper yep. Our federal government isn't perfect (that would be impossible) but compared to a conservative alternative we are considerably better off.
One difference between the Liberals/NDP and the conservatives is once in power, the former will eventually listen and respond to the public whereas the cons will simply bulldoze their agenda through to meet their goals..@the5thColumnist @Wikisteff
@Snowshadow @Wikisteff
Yes, along with insulin. First tiny step towards pharmacare.
@Wikisteff it still comes as a shock to realise that people are currently paying for contraception. Just seems weird to me.
@CloudyMrs Oh yeah, my whole life.
Usually it was taxed as well.
@Wikisteff Not something I ever had to consider. Just asked, and there it was.
@Wikisteff we have had free condoms here for as long as I can remember
@Wikisteff
How lucky those men are who don't need to worry about contraception, because.....the burden is put onto women
@Wikisteff since it's Transgender Day of Visibility today, i'll add that some trans men and non-binary people take those same contraceptives and for the same reason. the PM could have used more trans-inclusive language like "people who can get pregnant" instead of "women". but then i guess online transphobes would have dogpiled him, and his comms staff didn't want to be bothered by that
@Wikisteff This is great!
But also, I thought this happened a while back? But maybe I’m confusing provincial and federal news.
Edit: Should have done by research before commenting. I was remembering provincial with federal news. Glad to see it’s country-wide now!
