Unfortunately seems likely that rather than change their ways, America’s CEOs will just hire private armies to protect them from the public they exploit. Every day we’re one step closer to living in a Neal Stephenson novel
@adamconover its aaaaaaalmost syndicate, if you played it in the 90s
@adamconover
Healthcare shouldn't be rationed by private corporations looking to make a buck
@adamconover And here I am; Mentioning mr.Lee's greater Hong Kong just yesterday about something completely unrelated.
@adamconover Not upset about widespread adoption of people calling minivans “bimbo boxes” though. Tried to get that going for years
@adamconover I really hope they don't hire anyone who might betray them. I'm sure that's never happened in history...
@adamconover FOQNEs all the way down
@adamconover The disconnect between corporate power and public welfare is evident as corporations increasingly influence political and economic systems, prioritizing profit over societal needs. This excessive power contributes to public health challenges, including climate change and socio-economic inequalities, undermining efforts to improve health equity. Such an imbalance allows corporations to shape policies favoring their interests at the expense of the public good.
@adamconover Or Night City.
@adamconover Agreed (although I don't know who that particular novelist is, but I can imagine). This clip might be of interest to you: https://www.doubledown.news/watch/2023/august/9/the-corporate-war-on-democracy
@adamconover i doubt they will hire one, with Billionaires pulling the strings at the top of governments, tax payer funded entities like the Police, military will become their private army, exclusively defending them, their interests & properties (both police and military are used often to protect their properties and interests already) at the expense of the actual tax payers funding all of it.
@adamconover When you have easy access to the resources to protect yourself, there’s no way anyone would choose changing their behavior instead, that would be too hard.
@adamconover To quote the IRA: "we only have to get lucky once. They have to get lucky every time."
Also: are those mercenaries getting a decent healthcare plan? And what is the probability of finding a team of people where at least one of them has not been screwed by insurance, or knows someone who has?
@adamconover I hope it’s the first half of a Neal Stephenson novel where a beautifully elaborate stage is being meticulously set and not the second half where he just wraps everything up Game of Thrones style with a brief sidebar on regular expressions.
@adamconover Media will exploit the UHC shooting for hours and hours of profitable sponsored handwringing punditry asserting society is collapsing because it took reaction to a murder to give them the clue that most Americans loathe most American corporate leaders.
One reason so many Americans do not vote and tune out of the political process is they have reason to believe their lives are shaped by corporate oligarchs whose power to manipulate politicians negates the influence of the ballot.
@adamconover Just like in Russia. I call it the neo-feudal drift.
@adamconover we still outnumber them 1000000:1
@adamconover Snow Crash was not supposed to be an instruction manual.
@adamconover hey at least they'll be paying for their armies for a change
@adamconover Anyway we can get Stephenson to write a story about a bright, happy future? His stories have a bad habit of rhyming with future events.
