Study finds that once people use cargo bikes, they like their cars much less
Even some one-car households ditched vehicles in favor of cargo bike-sharing.
@arstechnica That thing is a beauty
@arstechnica the battery longevity is the biggest issue of widespread adoption. The real world data shows very clear it is no where near acceptable.
@WheresMyWater @arstechnica define "acceptable" - I've got 2k miles on my ebike battery in 15 months and it performs as new
I'ts like people expect 600+ km per full battery with their EV and in the same moment answer a survey where they only need like 70 km per day.
What is your claimed "real world" battery longevity number that you assert is impeding widespread adoption? I'm at 4.5 years (used 250 days a year) and I still have plenty of range. And from what I can see, cargo bike usage is steadily on the upswing.
EDIT: Troll alert, that account is anti-any electric vehicle, including electric cars. Just a drive-by negging from an asshole.
@artemesia @arstechnica don’t believe me look it up yourself. Be a Guinea pig if you want. I’m not at all anti EV. Avoid ICE garbage as well unless you like beautiful lawn ornaments like Fiats.
What's to disbelieve? You did a drive-by vague negging, and when asked to substantiate your neg you respond with a shitposter's "look it up". And my own real-world first-hand experience has my battery still giving plenty of range at 4.5 years. This brings my cost of operation down to 1.6 cents per mile.
@artemesia @arstechnica I was in no way saying every EV there will always be exceptions that have no major issues but in general I can only say I don’t widely adopt EV or some new ICE engine until they figure out all the issues and have right to repair policy standard no hiding repair costs.
@WheresMyWater @arstechnica For cars, unacceptable. For bikes, fantastic.
@spacehobo @arstechnica I received an e-bike free of charge and it was great for about 6 months just messing around no major use and it failed. Found countless other from many suppliers same issue. Maybe by the end of the decade it might be but for now it’s nowhere near. I despise electric parking brakes compared to mechanical.
@WheresMyWater @arstechnica I'm not sure what you're on about, but an e-assist bike like a Tern is absolutely fantastic and does not have "electric parking brakes" or whatever you're talking about.
@WheresMyWater @spacehobo @arstechnica
You get what you pay for.
I spent €3000 for a good e-bike and it’s still going strong, with 12.000 km and counting
@WheresMyWater @arstechnica I put 10,000 miles on mine in 4 years commuting through all weather including 15 degree winters and my battery is fine. if I have to buy a new one the $600 is still waaayyyyyy less than I would’ve spent on a car for 10k miles. The batteries are there.
@arstechnica You realise how unhelpful this carphobic shit is to those of us who can't physically ride a bike (or walk), right?
@http418 @arstechnica The key phrase is “once people use”. That population automatically doesn’t include those who can’t ride a bike.
@http418 @arstechnica you realize how many people cars disable every year, right?
@mpanhans @arstechnica You don't need to do a study to figure this out, you just need to try out a cargo bike.
@arstechnica
A cargo bike that can also carry another adult human is so much fun. Such a better way to get around for shortish trips
@arstechnica I wonder if these portable bathtubs have drains :)
@arstechnica @marcprecipice I have that bike and agree. I ride it everyday and only drive my car when I have to.
@arstechnica
I'm afraid of e-bike batteries exploding in the house. Do the chargers have an automatic shut off mechanism to prevent overcharging?
@arstechnica I use mine so much I have to keep my car's 12v battery on a trickle charger so it will start when I do finally use it.
@arstechnica My long-term plan is to become car-free and just zoom around town on an e-bike. I don't want a cargo bike, but, who knows? That could change over time.
@arstechnica I really want this and have tried it, but where I live in Florida bicyclists take a risk every time they hit the road. I've already been hit once, about 5 minutes after someone else turned left in front of me and came to an almost complete stop while looking at their phone. A pedestrian/bicycle train was only fifty yards ahead, so I left the road.

@arstechnica About a half mile down pedestrian trail and Uber Eats food delivery guy crossed the trail and pitched me over the hood of his Corolla. He explained that he needed to pull across the 30-foot-wide trail to see if any cars were coming.
I still ride my bike, but I am super careful about where I ride it. Here in America, it will take a long time to retrain the auto drivers.

@arstechnica I will always remember the time I saw a bloke cresting the top of (steep) highgate hill in a wheelbarrow bike - with two other full-grown blokes crammed in the tray. All giggling manically.
That man needs no car.
@arstechnica You can run some errands in this. Dress it up with some slick wicker baskets on the side and get a super endurance battery.
@arstechnica True for me. ️
I've wanted a two-person quadricycle with good portage capability for years now, for my wife and I to use both together and separately, but we live in a place where we can't safely and securely house such a thing.
@arstechnica For town use, this shouldn't be a problem.
