Finally, 21 January 03:28 Breakable Dancefloor reverted everything saying “Something isn't renamed just because a president says so”.
I’ll keep you informed. :)

@enzet When is it renamed then? For better or for worse, in *some* official capacity that is the name.
@enzet (also why isn't it a relation?)
@ill_logic @enzet There are plenty of other geographic features that have different names in different countries. I don’t know what OSM does for those cases. For example Gulf of Eilat vs. Gulf of Aqaba.
@EricFielding @enzet There are lots of tags to use for such things. Official names in different countries, names in different languages, etc. Looking at the conversation linked from one of the change sets, it seems like they may be going in that direction.
@ill_logic Interesting question. OSM Wiki states, that “...most seas do not have verifiable boundaries with the open ocean or other seas. Also, such large multipolygon relations can be very difficult to maintain...”
So it mostly implementation reasons and established practices in the community.
@ill_logic That’s why I find it interesting to keep track of these changes. The community should elaborate rules or apply existing ones.
