Get your kids ready for their inevitable future as gig economy workers!

Some real late stage capitalism vibes from the Aldi UK leaflet this week.

Choose your fighter.

@jamesthomson I’ve always wanted to work as a Chinese takeaway

@jamesthomson
Well it allows them to potentially ‘be like daddy/mummy’.

But I get what you’re saying.

@jamesthomson
There should be a pitchforks and guillotines playset to accompany those.

@jamesthomson That is an actual 2018 “Education model” Chromebook and an iPhone 4 — Recycling works!

@jamesthomson I feel a little called out by the grey bag, laptop, badge.

Might make a desktop background of "WORK".

@jamesthomson this was a despressing way to start the weekend

@jamesthomson
How about a fun crafting kit with an empty coke bottle, gasoline, and rags?

@jamesthomson You absolutely need the office worker kit for your next trip to WWDC.

@jamesthomson the “or doctor” part of that is fascinating.

@Ahakim An equally valued profession, it seems.

@Ahakim @jamesthomson the gig jobs are to pay off your student loans when you become a doctor

@jamesthomson Contra: those are the jobs kids actually see grownups do, along with teachers and law enforcement—but those jobs don’t have bags of stuff.

@allenshull Perhaps, but the 3+ seems pretty bleak…

@jamesthomson Capitalism: all about stuff and buying stuff and carrying your stuff around inside your other stuff. And kids of course seem to attract tons of stuff.

@jamesthomson I get the sentiment but my kids have ALL loved playing various jobs, and one of the most popular is having a kitchen somewhere else in the house full of play food, and they take our orders. It’s very cute.

@Bobbyp @jamesthomson Agreed. Kids play at doing the jobs they see people doing, and tbh if the message that “delivery driver” is to be equally valued as “doctor” I’m all for it. Kids don’t really care about the socioeconomic stuff, and it’s a lot harder to role play being a software engineer than it is to role play being a checkout operator or a takeaway owner.

They’re fascinated by the tools of the trade (hence doctor being popular - all kinds of toy medical instruments) rather than by the actual job itself. Plenty of kits out there for making pretend pizzas, not that many for making pretend TPS reports.

@m @Bobbyp @jamesthomson My brother and I loved the UPS driver as kids because he brought us stuff. I can see why kids would be fascinated with the person who brings people delicious food.

@m @Bobbyp @jamesthomson went to a local restaurant where they give the kids a pizza kit and let them make their own mini pizza and then baked it for them. Kept the kids busy and they enjoyed eating what they created.

@Ruhrnalist I wish I could… Lidl leaflet out this week.

@jamesthomson I remember when kids used to dream of being Astronauts or Doctors....

@Lazarou At least Doctor is one of the options still…

@jamesthomson this like something Obvious Plant would make

@jamesthomson I remember a lot of Army and Police playsets growing up, and well… it’s pretty depressing to think about now.

@jamesthomson "or Doctor" gives so much cognitive dissonance.

@irina @jamesthomson Yeah, I was about to ask: have we really gotten to the point of there being an Über for Doctors yet?

@jamesthomson sometimes I'm really happy to be 50+ - I hope to die before that stuff manifests itself :)

@jamesthomson @ppatel it’s a noble job if they can make it pay a living wage

Delivery people are critical to functioning of modern society
