One consequence of the go-go Obama years and the reactionary Trump aftermath is there’s an entire generation of otherwise smart adults who never had to figure out why things are the way they are. So they end up, a full decade too late, mystified that the electric car rockets guy is a fascist or the sentient bowling balls who funded the app-based lifestyles of the 2010s are trying to reinstitute feudalism.
Turns out those liberal arts educations are worth something after all.
@jimray Tbh I’ve been following politics since Reagan and I’m mystified by all of that.
@SasquatcherGeneral It’s a very confusing time! The idea that these plutocrats are gonna be the good ones is still pretty laughable though, right?
In short, “fiscally conservative but socially liberal” still isn’t a thing.
Come on, we had Gerry…
@jimray could we carve this in marble on the top of the westbound tunnel on Yerba Buena?
@marcprecipice Bonus: people would have to slow down to read it!
@jimray c'mon, nobody reads the docs.
@jimray If you remember this song on the radio & had a BA you knew it was coming.
@stevewfolds If only there were bootcamps for something other than learning to code
@jimray I’ve been exposed to schooling in things other than coding, was poking hex into ram on a Z80 in 1980 for fun.
Also known as they "could Nazi this coming"
History is important, even if the only thing it does is prevent making the same damned mistakes over and over again
Lol
@jimray That last line...that was literally what I was thinking through that whole paragraph: "wait, I was taught these things".
But most of human history has been like that. Granted, it wasn't democracy, but the basic rules of aristocrats using the serfs as cannon fodder to overthrow the king, or the czar's men using pogroms to sate middle-class bloodlust were the same.
We've successfully shackled Leviathan and so of course people are going to try to cut off the chains.
It has nothing to do with liberal arts education and everything to do with regular cluelessness. I mean, the History Channel is supposed to be mostly WW2 documentaries for the last 10 years, anyone who isn't seeing the parallels is being willfully blind.
