MNT Rack Reform first boot! next steps are finishing the panels, PCIe riser, and BMC

@wolf480pl unsure if bays make sense in 1U as opposed to top access

@mntmn well if it's mounted in a rack I'd imagine there'd be other stuff directly above and below it

@wolf480pl yeah, it means no hotswap of disks. i guess not the main focus of this version.

@wolf480pl @mntmn That's why you pull the whole server out with some simple rails

@quad @mntmn
Proper rails, like Dell's ReadyRails, can hold the server up while it's fully slid out of the rack. If you have enough slack in the cables to not have to unplug the server when sliding it out, this can work.

But if the rails drop the server into our hands after you slide it out, that's a pain.

Of course if the Reform doesn't weight much, has only 2 cables, and you don't have 10 of them in one rack, it won't be as much of a problem.

@quad @mntmn
In the end, any rackmount chassis is better than no rackmount chassis, and not everything has to have all those convenience features.

I just wanted to explain what the considerations are for someone with a lot of servers.

@wolf480pl @mntmn From my experience you don't really need the best rails out there for most servers 2U or under (unless they're very high-end and dense compute or storage nodes)

I do admit that it would be nice to have at least one or two 2.5" hot swap bays. Considering there seems to be width to spare.

Afaik storage is also one of the most popular uses for ARM.

@wolf480pl @quad yes, and your input is very welcome!

@mntmn @wolf480pl Always hotswap bays. It makes everything a lot simpler, especially with proper SES support for indicators. Not having to unrack something to swap drives is great. One thing I always make sure I have for home systems or work systems.

Alternatively if you make a ATX mount for the board, one can throw it in any relevant Supermicro case and have access to top of the line hot swap bays.

@mntmn Do you use a handheld lighter to start it up? 😂

@mntmn what is the notebook on that photo? Looks pretty nice!

@arek that's the MNT Reform!

@mntmn How many SATA ports? Could be great for NAS.

@epilys built in one, but can be easily extended with pcie

@mntmn @epilys If PCIE, also makes it easier to get proper SES support as well via having a card backplane and mini-sas.
