It's not on visionOS like the rest of my timeline (yet?) but my latest small side-project is so far an iOS RSS reader with some  News influences. Aiming for something to casually browse recent posts, without encouraging completionism using unread counts or badges.

Slowly making progress

It’s been a while! OPML import & export are working, folder sorting is in, plus adding feeds got a little polish.

I didn’t realise how much the app needed background refresh until I implemented it – much easier than I’d expected!

UI's taking shape on after a few adjustments.

Little nervous, but it’s time to TestFlight my RSS news reader for iOS & visionOS. It’s deliberately designed as a feed for stress-free, anti-completionist reading, without unread counts.

It's a little rough around the edges, and I'm not sure if anyone’s interested in this kinda of thing, but if you are, please give it a try! testflight.apple.com/join/bCe8

@sebj let me know if you have a TestFlight!

@sebj RSS readers seem to be missing on , so this is an opportunity! NetNewsWire is disabled till they can properly test it. Reeder is also AWOL (hopefully ‘cause there’s a full one coming soon). Now’s your chance!

@sebj Looks great! Nice work. Swipe to go back would be nice. Also a way to navigate folders, and/or configure how many articles are shown from the folder before the “more from <folder>” link. The look is very aesthetically pleasing.

@sebj oh I see swipe to go back is there … apologies, user error

@sebj Gonna stream of consciousness my feedback at you when I encounter it if it helps. I’m testing it on Vison Pro

1. Every time I add a feed it closes the add feed. If the plus button is supposed to work it’s not working, I get taken to another modal view and then hit add. Doing this over and over.
2. You already have the pre-set feeds divided in categories. You should auto create folders when one is added from there instead of going into just one ‘News’ folder!

@sebj Thanks. Will give it a try 😊
Always interested in trying new things. News reader apps especially

@sebj Looks great! Like a nicer version of Apple News.

@sebj Nice idea. Trying it out to see if it can replace NetNewsWire, but app crashes when I try to import an OPML file that I exported from NetNewsWire

@ronaldk Thanks for giving the app a go! That's odd though – I tested a couple exports from NetNewsWire that were ok. Any chance you'd be willing to send me an OPML file that crashes, either via email (hi@sebj.me) or as a link here?

@sebj sure, no problem, I’ve just sent it by email

@ronaldk Appreciate it! This is fixed in build 5, which is rolling out now

@sebj FYI, some services will export subscriptions as a .xml file. The app currently will not let you select it from the file picker. I changed the extension on the file to .opml and it worked flawlessly. I exported my subscriptions from Feedbin.

@nickclements Ah good catch thanks! This is fixed in build 5, rolling out now

@sebj Thanks for the quick response! I just re-imported my feeds from the XML file and it worked great.

@sebj Just joined the TestFlight. Love low pressure philosophy! Could totally see this becoming my primary reader app.

@sebj Love this concept and could totally see myself using it as my main RSS app!

I did run into an issue trying to add Daring Fireball... neither daringfireball.net or daringfireball.net/feeds/main seemed to work (I was able to just enter daringfireball.net in NetNewsWire and it discovered the second URL automagically)

@sebj its coming out great! Is it still under development? I find it hard to understand how to add a new feed, after i already imported feeds from an ompl file. Is there any way to manually enter a new feed? Thanks for the great work!

@sebj actually, the plus button is available in ipad version but not on iphone. Unfortunately the icloud sync dosent work, even if it is activated in ios setting. All the feeds and folders from my ipad dont sync to my iphone. Any fix?

@danielemartire Sorry about this! The add button got accidentally removed along with the rest of the Feeds tab’s toolbar in the last update 🤦‍♂️ You might be able to install an older build from TestFlight [1.0 (29)] under 'Previous Builds’ for now, otherwise I'll have an update out in a couple hours.

Hard to say what’s going wrong with iCloud sync – how long has it been since you added feeds from iPad? I might also add a sync indicator w/ more info.

@sebj great, ill wait for the new build then! For the sync, actually not sure. I had feeds, today i decided to out them in folders plus add a new feed manually. But on iphone, no change in folder structure or the nee feed. Tried deleting the app from iphone and reistalling but all i got was zero feeds. Looks like they are not syncing.

@sebj thanks for the update. The new build fixed the glitch on iphone. Yet, cannot manage to sync feeds in between ipad and iphone…:(
