Let's say I wanted to make my own webfont from scratch. Like, even drawing my own glyphs. Where do I start? Good tutorials?
Also, let's say that I care a lot about the number of bytes in the font. Then what?
@spiralganglion I’m putting the SystemViz icons into a font file this summer. I’m using Glyphs. I took a workshop from Victor Baltus to learn the shortcuts (typedesignclass.com) but he doesn’t offer training year-round.
@peter @spiralganglion +1 Glyphs, although it’s been a <del>minute</del><ins>decade</ins> https://ericportis.com/posts/2012/sooper/
@spiralganglion If it’s not already on your radar you might want to be aware of variable fonts especially the “custom axes” which allow you to define arbitrary (and some standardized) variability in the visualization of the glyphs. Some examples of what can be done with this technique: https://v-fonts.com/tags/C5
Might help you squeeze bytes depending on what you’re trying to do or might well make it worse haha
@haydencodes Yes! But how does one make a variable font of their own?
@arcade Oh cool, the mini version is included in SetApp (which I already sub to). Thanks for the rec!
@spiralganglion have you used @fontstruct before? Probs the easiest way to get started
@liaizon I haven’t! Thanks for the tip :)
@spiralganglion Iʼd draw on paper, digitalize, then look for an old font editor to get your initial bearings. A lot of us who started in the late 1980s played with Fontographer because of its shared parentage with Freehand. Youʼd need a VM to run it now though. Fontlab is my preference now but I still dig v. 5.
