Isn't the "problem" that browsers use the same field for search terms and URLs? TLDs and file extensions are different namespaces and shouldn't have to worry about conflicts.

@scotclose @Edent I think this is more the problem that email clients, wiki servers, social media sites and others always treat foo.bar as a domain and make it clickable, which means existing content will now point to valid domains.

I'd love it if tools only did that if you started with https:// but that ship has long sailed

So, if someone sends an email or text that references foo.zip will clients try to make it a hyperlink? Does that already happen if people refer to the DOS executable command.com?

@scotclose @Edent depends on the client, but yes, it's common enough that I've used fake . or non-breaking spaces to prevent it. Homoglyph for better security, for a change
