The Work Week :tm: has begun, which means injecting my upcoming short story with even more clever (and exciting!) subtlety.

...with ideas that emerged in my head last weekend.

Screenshot of the first half of my new ideas for the short story's subtlety. The text reads as follows: - Fallowark once had a church, that had been demolished once the Maven of Gluttony. This will not be mentioned, and the ruins won’t be present. Instead, a giant blossom, taller than the tallest building, stands in the village square, which is put in a way as if there was a church in the horizon, but now there isn’t. - Fallowark had a vicar, but they were sacrificed by the Maven of Gluttony after taking over. This won’t be mentioned or explained; instead when the Maven signals to attack Lucius, the aforementioned giant blossom’s head will “spill out” a desiccated head that will scream out the alarm. The allusion to the church, and the specific vocal tone of their screaming, will subtly spell out who this is. - The Hell-Knights of Gluttony were the Landowner’s mercenary company during his years of cruel warmongering. Aside from their attire being a mix of a peasant worker garb and mercenary armour, each will have the Landowner’s noble family’s crest on them, which used to be his mercenary’s company’s crest. But because they have lost themselves to Satan, the crest will be so stained, it’ll appear as a vaguely emblem-shaped blotch on their clothes – exactly where their hearts are.
Screenshot of the 2nd half of my subtlety ideas. Text reads as follows: - The Landowner’s mansion got destroyed once Fallowark turned into Satan’s Fertile Grounds. It sank into the earth, creating an abscess from which the corruption grows and stabilises. From a bird’s eye view, it would look like a bottomless wound on the land. - The Landowner is never seen or mentioned because he has become the heart of corruption, from which the Maven draws strength. All the attention, control, and validation the Landowner wanted, has been taken by the Maven, who is viewed by the entirety of Fallowark as a Pastor sent by God to relieve them of their fears of hunger and poor harvests.

I'm glad I found these ideas so soon; I still felt as if the location of my story was missing the correct spice a little bit too much. With these, I consider the necessary levels of detail and complexity at the exact place I want them to be in.
