@nixCraft Yeah, IF you have a good memory, which many users do not. GUIs are great for people with poor to average memories (also for people with little to no typing skills) but for some reason some geeky types think it is okay to make fun of GUI users, just because they presumably have great memories and can remember all those obscure terminal commands and their options (or don't mind spending hours reading and re-reading documentation).

@SeanWelsby @nixCraft IF you can distinguish funny little icons a GUI might seem like a good idea. Not everyone is able to do that. Please don’t make fun of people preferring a clean command line interface where the only „hassle“ is remembering a few options. It’s nearly impossible for me to use a GUI fast, it all depends on little icons which basically all look the same to me. #unix #linux #macOS

Totally right! When application toolbars started using icons, I always looked for a way to only show text. One app had a table function. Guess what symbol they used. We who spoke other languages than English were just scratching our heads.

Oftentimes one could hover with the mouse to get what we now call alt-text. But that's much harder to do on a touch screen.

So please designers, don't rely only on a pictographic UI.
