Good morning Fedi friends!

🎄 All I want for Christmas is: checking off every item in my setup to do list without breaking anything 🎅

Buying a VPS, installing YunoHost, changing DNS records and installing was SUPER EASY. These next tasks: not so much, despite all the articles I've been reading and videos I watched. As always, wish me luck!

a screenshot of my Notion board about my VPS with checkboxes for things I need to do: - set up a separate user account (with a strong password and sudo privileges) - disable root login in SSH - set up a default-block firewall ruleset (don't forget to allow SSH so you don't lock yourself out) - install all available updates to the installed set of packages & reboot it - follow YunoHost security configs - SSH authentication via key - set up decentralized incremental and encrypted backups with BorgBackup - install logcheck

@_elena @mkj @st3fan I'd suggest using borgmatic as an easier-to-use Borg interface.
Having everything as a configuration file is definitely helpful when you access the server again in 3 months, and you forgot which commands you have executed 😅

The internal yunohost backup mechanism is good, but you should transfer the data to another location, at least once a week, if you want a reliable recovery option.
It is a full backup, no incremental one.

Of course it depends on what you want to protect and if you're willing to accept manual effort or dataloss and longer downtimes.

It starts with a experimental Fedi instance, continues with a mail server etc. :-)
