If your iPhone has been bricked during the update to iOS 17.3 beta 2:
- Download the iOS 17.3 beta 1 IPSW on your Mac (https://updates.cdn-apple.com/2023WinterSeed/fullrestores/052-20038/3F493ABA-9230-4B7C-9C61-D85B3DC79504/iPhone16,2_17.3_21D5026f_Restore.ipsw)
- Plug iPhone into Mac
- Press volume up, then volume down, then press and hold the side button until the recovery mode screen shows up
- Use iMazing (preferred) or Finder to restore the IPSW (in Finder, hold down Option when clicking the restore button to select the IPSW)
- Your iPhone should be successfully restored without any data loss (see reply!)
Notes:
- The button sequence varies by device model, but most recent iPhones use the one described
- I don’t think it's possible to do a restore in Finder without it erasing the device first, I used iMazing which is more flexible (https://imazing.com not a sponsored post, I just like it)
- You may need to enter your passcode twice after the restore, at which point the device will show an "attempting data recovery" screen for several minutes (make sure you enter the correct passcode!)
@_inside Appreciate your help here, though ugh I really didn't want to have to buy an app just to get my phone working again without a full restore :(. I tried pointing the Finder to the IPSW but it gave me this lovely error:
@wonkish Try Apple Configurator 2. Worked for me (iPhone 14 Pro)
@BuRnCol Yeah, I *think* I might have gotten it to work (my phone says Attempting data recovery, though Configurator just gave me an error about it giving up waiting).
The trick was ensuring I had at least 30GB of space (I think it expands the IPSW locally), then dragging and dropping the correct IPSW for my device onto it in Configurator, and clicking Revive.
@_inside I attempted this process prior to the post and clicking Update gave the same bricking symptom but clicking Restore worked but required restore from iCloud due to data being erased from the rewrite of the software.
@iBanks That's why I recommend using iMazing, because it allows you to restore without erasing the data first. Doesn't work 100% of the time, but in situations like this, it's really nice
@saagar Right, this was the first approach I made before any others started posting they ran into the same issue and the update option resulted in the same thing. Even a restore and iCloud restore resulted in the same. I had to setup as new and start fresh without iCloud restore.
@dlevi It’s Option + Click Update to select the ipsw on Mac. But again, the update option resulted in a boot loop. A restore and then restoring from iCloud Backup also resulted in a boot loop. A restore and setup as new worked fine, just has to reinstall all my apps manually. The issue that Rambo found was that if you had Back Tap enabled, it caused this crash so with that setting being enabled in the cloud backup continued to cause the issue.
@_inside We should be able to use Apple Configurator to do a revive to retain data right? I know finder just does a restore. Has been a while since I needed to restore or revive iOS.
@mrmacintosh I think Apple Configurator could work, yes. I've been using iMazing for years so I'm not familiar with what's available in Finder and/or Configurator
AC2 is working (for me). I dropped the IPSW on the iPhone (in Recovery Mode) and selected Revive ... about 60 Minutes later the iPhone is working WITH my old data
@_inside How do you find the right link to an iPhone 14 Pro Max. Is there a list somewhere? Sorry and thanks.
here you can search your file:
https://ipswbeta.dev/ios/17.x/
@_inside why is iMazing preferred?
@sanguish @_inside according to this reply (https://mastodon.social/@_inside/111693687838493340) because it can restore w/o data loss.
Could have sworn that iTunes was able to do this as well, but haven’t used IPSWs since iTunes died. Maybe that functionality died with it.
@_inside Found a fix for this via Configurator, try at your own risk, and ensure you have at least 30GB free on your Mac to start.
1. Download the IPSW file for your device from here, choose build 21D5026f: https://ipswbeta.dev/ios/17.x/
2. Download Apple Configurator.
3. Put your iPhone into recovery mode then plug it in: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201263
4. Open Apple Configurator and drag and drop the IPSW file onto your iPhone in Configurator and click Revive.
5. Wait.
@_inside 6. Eventually your phone should restart, slide to unlock and start recovery.
7. Enter your phone passcode twice.
8. Wait for it to do so. Configurator may throw an error about it taking too long, ignore it and don't click the Stop button.
9. Eventually when it finishes, unlock your phone, then force quit Configurator so you don't need to click its Stop button (might not make a difference but I was paranoid).
@_inside Took several attempts using iMazing but eventual got it done. Thanks to you and a link I found in the article on 9to5 Mac. Canceled my appointment at the Apple Store for tomorrow and now have a working iPhone 14 Pro Max again. Thnx again.
@_inside Thanks, mate - seems to be working and saving me a trip of about 2 hours.
