This past week I made the choice to take my online #privacy more seriously. I had no idea how many accounts I had out there on websites I had forgotten existed. In my research of how to #degoogle and #deamazon I read that it's a marathon and not a sprint. Boy was that person right. I have to cherish the small victories and look at how far I've come in such a short amount of time. Now, back to the salt mines of deactivating accounts!
@analoghobbyist It took me over 4 years to #deGoogle, remove unused accounts, regain control of the data, and build a new flow. And I'm still working on that. It really is a marathon. Embrace your determination, it will pay off in many ways. Just take your time, you're winning already. Good luck!
@alexeystar It started at the end of last year when I started dumping streaming subscriptions in favor of physical media and media I own outright. It's escalated to a privacy crusade now, so I am trying to extricate myself from the web of bullshit I've woven. Good to hear there is light at the end of the tunnel!
@analoghobbyist It's all connected. You may start with digital privacy concerns and end up buying tape cassettes and using Gopher Getting out of tech bubbles is an exciting challenge.
@alexeystar hell, I've already started down that path with CDs, records, and a DAP
@alexeystar @analoghobbyist Google Photos and the Washington Post are gonna be the most difficult for me to give up. I’ve started the process, but just barely.
@Bloomee @alexeystar @analoghobbyist Washington Post?
@Bloomee @analoghobbyist Immich and PhotoPrism are great self-hosted alternatives to Google Photos. Ente, if you don't have a server. May I wonder what's your issue with WP?
@alexeystar @analoghobbyist making slow progress but feels early for me. Had to pause switch to Proton after their CEO came out for Trump and Rs.
Cancelled IG, WhatsApp, and xitter. Hoping to do Google, amz, and FB. (rarely use FB)
Keeping an eye on apple too and suspect I may eventually get off their hw, but lower priority at the moment
@dgodon I had to do the same thing. Did some research and went to Tuta.
@analoghobbyist What swayed you to Tuta? And how are you liking it so far? I'd heard some knocks against them in earlier threads, but do appreciate that they're here on Mastodon and seem to be reasonably stable company, and don't know of any red flags. Not sure I need their level of security tho perhaps it's a nice option to have.
@analoghobbyist I'd like a well integrated email aliasing feature. Proton seemed good, but is a bit spendy so I've been using DDG's free one. But, it's not integrated so doesn't seem I can reply via alias - tho perhaps I just haven't figured it out.
@dgodon to be honest the only two I saw recommended over and over again were Proton and Tuta. I went with Proton first, saw the comments their CEO made in support of Trump, and made the switch to Tuta. It suits my needs. It doesn't have a ton of features, but I'm realizing I didn't need many of the things it doesn't offer.
@alexeystar @analoghobbyist I just started this journey recently. Been a process! But it's fun! Actually feels like a secret squirrel hobby :P
@samuel 100%! The learning new things part is keeping me engaged and motivated to keep going.
@alexeystar @analoghobbyist I'm down to three websites that I use a dedicated Chromebook for. Unfortunately.
Getting there
@analoghobbyist Excellent! Don't give up! You got this!

@emailgeek this is great!
I think there might still be an Amazon account I abandoned back in 2017. Do you have clear instructions on how to delete it?
@RussSharek I haven't closed mine yet, but if you can still login go to the bottom of the Your Account page. There is a link that says "Close your Amazon account".
Thanks for the tip!
