Rules of Engagement (Omnitrend Software/Mindcraft Software, 1991)

👆 This game was re-released on GOG last year by Throwback Entertainment without any documentation. 🤷‍♂️

@dosnostalgic It's like LCARS and the Joker had progeny...I love it. :)

@dosnostalgic More like WCARS, amirite?!?!?!

@dosnostalgic Wow I had this game and totally forgotten about it. Thanks for helping dredge up some fun memories.

@dosnostalgic Looks like someone was channelling that old Star Trek game I forget the name of. It was pretty funny to discover that phasers could be fired at 500% power and one shot basically anything at a smallish energy cost.

RoE also seems to have a pretty overt TNG influence in its UI design.

@beeoproblem @dosnostalgic I think that I have that game. Where you can choose from Federation, Klingon, Orions and ...Romulans? And you need to allocate energy between weapons, shields and engines ?

@FantasmitaAsex @dosnostalgic Possibly. I remember at least some typing of commands being involved in the game and some grid based movement.

IIRC if you fired a torpedo into a star it'd become a nova. Don't recall why I did that.

@beeoproblem @FantasmitaAsex TREK games have many variations, but they all start with the original 1971 mainframe Trek.

@dosnostalgic @beeoproblem The games was called "Intra-Galactic Battles" by Willian D. Hause in 1990

I put here the text file that comes with it :

Intra-Galactic Battles Rules and Information
Location:
The game takes place in a section of the galaxy surrounding the
Earth. The game map is a section of space 250 light-years by 150
light-years. Game coordinates go from (0,0) in the bottom left corner up
to 150 at the top of the screen and 250 at the right side of the screen.

Ships:
There are four different types of ships: Andromedan, Federation,
Gorgon, and Orion. The difference between each type is in the type of
weapon they use. There are six different classes of each ship type. The
value of each class is given when selecting a ship. Class 5 is a base
station and is worth the same amount as a class 4 ship. Class 6 is a star
base and is worth twice as much as a class 4 ship. Star bases and base
stations are immobile and have more crew than mobil ships do.

... (The file includes a lot , including lore and isn't exactly a Star Trek game)

@dosnostalgic so some one reimagined LCARS but high on LSD ?

@dosnostalgic oh god, it's like the grandpa of Protracker. impressive.

@dosnostalgic when you want to get organized and a bullet journal just isn’t cool enough?

@dosnostalgic somehow they managed to both waste tons of pixels _and_ pack a lot of information on the screen.

That's just impressive, okay?

@dosnostalgic what’s the name of the game?

@dosnostalgic
There’s a part of my brain that goes “hmmmmm.. I admire your dedication to sparkle motion.” And then there’s the part that goes..

@dosnostalgic #Alt4You Low res user interface with green, white, orange, and purple on a black background, with lots of intricate little buttons, readouts, graphs, and controls neatly wedged in, in a retro futuristic design, but also what in the heck is going on with all of this stuff? Incomprehensible without a manual.
