i set up my new arm based vps (rented at netcup) for personal use and did the thing where i sync my Documents folder with unison bidirectionally. it's just a cronjob. also have a cronjob that makes a daily and a weekly backup of that folder on the server using tar. both are just a single line of invoking a utility. combined with the internet speeds & storage available today it's just simple & good :3

@mntmn Cool. I've been using Syncthing with an affordable VPS and it also works great to sync docs and an Obsidian vault across a few computers using different OSs.

@passim @mntmn I use Syncthing as well, it's really great: You install it and it works out of the box without any configuration (even over the internet through relay and discovery server if you router can do UPNP). I did try unison in the past and things got ugly, felt somewhat clunky.

@dr_laemmerbein @passim edit: i had a snarky response here but instead i will just clarify. i used syncthing in the past and it wasn't for me. i didn't want any p2p features, web ui, custom ports and all that stuff. it's too much for me to handle. i like ssh, sshfs and using things like rsync and unison over ssh. so i'm happy now.

@mntmn I still saw the snarky response in my notifications :D Fair enough! In the end, it's all about workflow...
