My profile's bio may need to be tweaked soon. I'm thinking of coming out of filmmaking retirement to make promotional videos for the #Fediverse.
I just rewatched a video I made years ago to criticize Big Tech and oh my goodness it's so tame when you consider the horrors we are facing today: https://vimeo.com/292544650
Images from Monday's spectacle (feat. Big Tech oligarchs) would be PERFECT as promotional material for the Fediverse.
Oh my, I'm so tempted to make a video. Talk me out of it
Thank you for your encouraging responses
For context: I spent a decade making films for progressive causes (and freelance corporate gigs on the side, for clients that aligned with my values).
I stopped in 2022 because of: lack of time / schedule incompatible with caring for an infant.
When I was making films professionally I could work for 10+ hours, uninterrupted. Not anymore.
At most I have 4-5 hours now. And it's so hard to get in a state of flow and get everything done (cont')
Still, I keep having a recurrent thought that if I don't make videos now, to help promote the Fediverse, I would regret it in the future.
Yes my daily schedule makes it a challenge to do videos. But this is a good challenge, for a GREAT cause.
I'm so frustrated and angry and disgusted by Big Tech barons and their horrid behavior... I need to channel this rage somewhere... into a creative project
Please be patient with me (making videos is SOOO time consuming). But do know I'm on your side.
Thank you again for your sweet, encouraging messages. I’m typing this as I go pick up my child from daycare.
So yes I will definitely make a video soon. It will take time. Weeks possibly. But on the upside: as soon as I finish the English version, I could get to work on French and Italian ones for maximum impact. One of the perks of being a polyglot
I’ll be mostly offline for the rest of the day, thanks again
So it is decided. Yes, I will make promotional videos for the #Fediverse: explaining what it is, how to use various software... and setting it up in contrast to the current horrors of Meta and X.
Anger and frustration have been building up in me since November. This week has been a hell of a ride. I gotta channel all these negative feelings somewhere and turn them into something positive instead. Promoting the Fediverse and resuming making films seem like the perfect match...
I can feel tremendous momentum building for the Fediverse. There has never been a better time to convince people to abandon the closed silos of Big Tech, in favor of something open and ethical.
I spent six months writing articles about the Fediverse (https://blog.elenarossini.com/tag/the-future-is-federated/) and I'm super grateful for the positive responses here. That said, I realize that in our post-literate society, videos may be more effective and persuasive.
So: game on! (just be patient please)
The coming days will be interesting.
I will be spending half the day reading Peppa Pig books to my child, drawing and building DUPLO and LEGO sets with her...
and half the day writing a script that aims to inflict the maximum damage imaginable to the perception of Meta and X. While of course promoting the Fediverse in contrast to the dystopia of Big Tech.
I reckon I need 20 hours to make a first video. Please be patient but know I'm extremely motivated, time constraints and all
THANK YOU for encouraging me to do this. It feels really energizing
I’m often thinking about this brilliant quote by filmmaker Ava DuVernay: “If your dream is only about you, it’s too small.”
My dream / lofty goal: for everyone to know about the #Fediverse and why / how to join it.
Striving to create an easy to follow, persuasive video explainer.
P.S.: I changed my bio
