I'm almost feeling left out that github did not feel the need to inform me 30-50 times that I have access to Copilot

as I log in to look at it I find myself compelled to remember when "social media" was the new cool thing and github was "social coding", but now AI is the new cool thing and github is an "AI-powered developer platform"

when I imagine a return to a glorious and imaginary prelapsarian past it is a return to a time when people made products and told you what the products were, and when newer, unrelated products came out the old products still kept serving the old need without needing to claim that they were some new, different thing and your old needs would soon be abandoned, as soon as they could figure out how to pivot to video

I was going to give Quark Xpress as an example of this, how Netscape Navigator came out and Quark Xpress did not turn into a web browser but continued to be "desktop publishing and page layout software"

but then I visited Quark Xpress's website AND THEY STILL CALL THEMSELVES THAT

I mean in fairness one of their little feature lozenges does claim that they "Use AI recognition in local image libraries", but this seems like a begrudging concession at most and possibly an actually useful feature at best. still, it is on that flimsy justification that I will hang my decision not to spend >$500 on a perpetual license just to make a point (also, but less importantly, I have not done "desktop publishing" in 27 years)
