@TheDailyBurble @johnleonard its quite analogous with the situation around environmental sustainability: there are vast historical investments around fossil fuels, cities have been designed for cars etc, so immediate change is not possible. We are sitting on vast, so-called "stranded assets": things that eventually need to be written off. Vested interests will push to delay as much as possible, but on the other hand one can set realistic targets for every step of the way. Managed unplugging.
