I'm considering moving instances again, this time to kolektiva.social..

Because they have lots of cool lgbt emojis 💚 but mostly because I really dislike the 500 character limit here!

Nothing wrong with chaos.social, and I like the management, but that character limit is against my principle that things should be allowed to have depth..

And the downside people sometimes mention, "I don't want to read long essays" is not really a proper argument in my opinion, because first of all, most toots

Update: multiple frens pointed out some downsides to kolektiva, so I might have to go on another search for a better instance.. it's hard!

* 1000+ char limit
* fancy emojis
* NOT federated with threads
* trustworthy management/not too small
* ideally, storage in Europe..

@lashman @hugo that's interesting.. so if I understand correctly, it's a sort of middle ground between self-hosted and a normal instance?

@bazkie @hugo pretty much, yeah :) you pay the $6 per month, and Hugo does all the heavy lifting, haha :D

@lashman @hugo that's definitely an option to look into then! but if I understand you correctly, I can't configure the char limit there?

@bazkie @hugo unfortunately not :( purely because it's not really an admin option, it's something that has to be changed by hand in the code stuff, it's not in the dashboard (for whatever reason)

@lashman @hugo I see! that's a shame. I hope the mastodon devs will make that a configurable thing!

for me that's kind of a dealbreaker as that is my main reason for wanting to move.. I guess maybe I should stay here for a while and hope this becomes a configurable thing at some point :)

@bazkie @hugo yeah, it really really REALLY should be! i seriously hope they'll add it eventually (soon, preferably) ... that, and proper profile migration, i need my posts to go with me. if it wasn't for that i would've moved to my instance like 2 years ago (that's where my bot is, and lots of other people, lol)

@lashman @hugo hear hear! this should all be basic functionality!

btw, do you or hugo know if you can customize emojis on there?

@bazkie @hugo yes, that you CAN do in the dashboard, lol :) so yeah, you have full control over emotes, federation etc. :)

@bazkie @hugo another reason why i REALLY want to move to my instance but can't, lol

@lashman @bazkie @hugo

To be fair, the change is reasonably simple and persists across upgrades.

Here are the instructions I followed to take twoot.space up to 5K characters:
fouquet.me/2023/09/22/mastodon

(However, I much prefer the configurable character count of GoToSocial. There's no post editing on that yet, although it's on the outstanding milestones list.)

René Fouquet · Increasing the Mastodon (4.2) post character limitNote (10.10.2024): Starting with Mastodon 4.3, these instructions no longer work. Please see this post for updated instructions.

@HauntedOwlbear @bazkie @hugo oh, no, it IS a simple change, absolutely! the problem is that we don't have access to any of that when we're doing managed hosting

@lashman @bazkie @hugo

Ooooh! I had no idea! I'd assumed that masto host would provide a server login!

Right then, don't mind me!

@HauntedOwlbear @bazkie @hugo unfortunately not :sadness: still hoping Hugo at least adds that eventually to the masto.host user panel :P

@lashman @HauntedOwlbear @hugo I think that would potentially break a lot of automated update stuff so he probably doesn't want to go there lol 😂

he could add the character 'fix' manually as an exception to his rule of sticking to the official code.. but I also understand he doesn't want to make these kinds of exceptions :)

because in the end that kind of thing will always increase the chance of things breaking and costing him more time to manage stuff..
