I love how Paint 3D, a program I never installed, somehow got onto my computer and associated itself with every 3D file format; and so if I ever double click a 3D file it launches Paint 3D, pops up a dialog saying Paint 3D doesn't support that file format, and then when I close that dialog opens a second dialog saying Paint 3D was discontinued in November 2024

@mcc but you _have_ heard of it

@mcc Oh yeah, opening images for editing on Windows, what a strange app list.

@mcc
yeah, it worked well for my needs, for a while.

then i got paint.net.

but now I'm on Linux and struggling. to find a simple alternative

@Sassinake @mcc you used Paint 3D and Paint.NET for the same tasks?

@Sassinake @mcc what about pinta? I've been using it for a while for my paint needs(!) and if it is GTK so, if you're using GNOME as a desktop environment it suits completely. This is flathub link: flathub.org/apps/com.github.Pi

@erkam @mcc

yeah I have both Pinta and Krita, for my modest needs, but I'm struggling getting used to them.
Mind you, I haven't needed them for my usual need recently, which is: moodboards for my fanfiction, like so:

@Sassinake @mcc To tell you the truth, I wanted to do something similar recently, although not exactly like this, and I opened canva and did it there, unlike the pinta I suggested. i feel guilty 🫣

@erkam @mcc

I don't want to use canva, for it's integration of ai, and the subscription model.

between ms paint and paint. net, my needs (layered moodboards or silly memes) were met.

Maybe I just need more practice

@Sassinake @mcc
I think the ones on linux are not as easy to use as ms paint or paint.net.it's really a pity that linux doesn't have a program as easy to use as paint.
yes, maybe a little practice will make it easier.

@erkam @Sassinake pinta is very glitchy for me. It doesn't properly function with fractional dpi or trackpads

@mcc @Sassinake
KolourPaint? KDE apps usually run more smoothly for me.

@erkam @Sassinake maybe i'll try it out, thank you

@erkam @mcc I'm using Cinnamon - a gnome clone, I think?

@Sassinake @erkam KDE apps depend on Qt— a general toolkit that works even on Mac and Windows— and will *probably* be compatible with non-KDE desktops.

@Sassinake @mcc as far as I know; both GNOME and cinnamon uses GTK toolkit but cinnamon purposefully stayed at GTK 3 but gnome move forward to GTK 4.

@mcc I hate myself for becoming this person but, have you looked into recently? I switched when announced

@mcc That has similar vibes to Termux somehow registering itself as the default app for almost all "unknown" file types on my phone, including `.gpx` tracks.

I have apps on my phone that are perfectly capable of opening those, and if I send one of those to Termux, it'll just... start a shell. And do nothing else.

@farhaven @mcc Settings menu might vary some, but you should be able to fix @termux from doing that by going to:

⚙️Settings
> Apps
> Choose default apps
> Opening links
:terminal:Termux
> Clear defaults

@mcc I’ve been computing since 1981, and Paint 3D is without doubt the most useless piece of software I have ever encountered. It does nothing, and it’s even bad at that.

@knightlie Like, having a basic 3D model viewer in your OS would be so useful. Mac OS 8.6 had that (Quickdraw 3D in Scrapbook) and it was great
